Fimmvörðuháls Trail from above Skogafoss
by Athena on Oct 11, 2012
Skogar, South, Iceland
Hiking | 4.6 miles
One of the most beautiful hikes I have been on.We cheated upfront but having our tour guide drive us up the mountain to the first hut.  From there we hike to Magni Volcano (a new volcano that erupted right before E15 on March 2010).  The conditions when we started were perfect...blue skies in the mod 30 degF.  The day before dumped a lot of snow on the ground therefore our track was...

Arnarstapi-Hellnar Coastal Hike
by Athena on Oct 08, 2012
Arnarstapi, West, Iceland
Hiking | 0.7 miles
This was a leisurely hike...or rather stroll, but one that should not be missed.  The views from the trail are fantastic and on a sunny day there are plenty of places to just sit there and watch the ocean.  This track obviously had us in the ocean...pretty typical of cellular signals on the coast. Also, we started midway along the trail.  If you drive to the end of Arnarstapi and start there and...

Camel's Hump - Vermont
by Athena on Mar 04, 2012
Dowsville, Vermont, United States
Hiking | 0.0 miles
We always visit Vermont in the winter...not sure why.  Camel's Hump is a wonderful hike.  The first visit back in 2006, the Camel's Hump summit eluded us because of the deep snow.  Guess what?  The second vista in March 2012 did as well.  Our first attempt was March 2.  There are two trails to the summit - Burrows trail and Forrest Trail.  We took the Forrest Trail since it was supposed to...

Devils Garden to Double O Arch and return along Primitive trail
by Athena on Apr 26, 2012
Utah, United States
Hiking | 6.1 miles
The hike turned out to be better than I thought. Don't get discouraged at the start of your hike when you are accompanied by 50 of your closest friends because after Landscape Arch, the trail becomes a bit quieter.  This is a popular hike in Arches and their longest.  It starts off paved then transitions to sand and eventually to slick rock.  I would rate this trail moderate only because of the...

Quickie hike since we were tired form the previous 5 days of hiking.  Nice view of the Upheaval Dome.  Mostly slick rock hiking

Lathrop Canyon - Island in the Sky district
by Athena on Apr 25, 2012
Moab, Utah, United States
Hiking | 5.3 miles
Probably one of the most beautiful hikes for little effort....except you have to be patient.  The first 2 miles of the hike is over flat terrain with now view.  You are walking across a pasture.  But once you get to the rim everything changes.  The views are amazing.  The hike is predominately over sand/grass for the first 1.5 miles then over slick rock until you get to the rim.  At the rim...

Horseshoe Canyon - the Maze District
by Athena on Apr 24, 2012
Floy, Utah, United States
Hiking | 18.5 miles
This hikes only 7 miles round trip but I guess the canyon added quite a few miles to the total. Not good GPS courage I guess.  The drive out there is interesting...32 miles of dirt road.  Lousy directions form the books I referenced but eventually got there.  Look for a bright range cone that will signal the right turn towards the canyon trailhead ( this is after 23 miles from SR 24).Great...

Peekaboo Trail-Canyonlands Needles
by Athena on Apr 23, 2012
La Sal Junction, Utah, United States
Hiking | 10.1 miles
One of the best hikes we have ever done...and we have done quite a few.  This trail has it all.....slick rock hiking, great panorama views, and pictographs.  While this is a 10 mile round trip hike, it is well worth the effort.  Make sure you start off early to avoid the heat as later in the day it got quite toasty.  There are two ladder to assist you with a large drop...

Bow Glacier Falls - Banff
by Athena on Sep 17, 2011
Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Hiking | 5.7 miles
Another great hike in the Banff area.  This is relatively friendly hike and great if you don't want to exert yourself too much one day during your trip.Caution...the GPS track is not accurate.  It is hand-drawn and does not reflect the true distance.  The rue distance form the Nim-Ti-Jah Lodge to the falls and back is about 6 miles roundtrip.  Not too many steep inclines but you must be careful not to...

Helen Lake - Banff
by Athena on Sep 17, 2011
Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Hiking | 6.6 miles
This is probably my favorite hike in Banff.  The weather was spectacular which gave way to amazing views.Caution...the GPS track is hand-drwn so it does not reflect the actual mileage.  The roundtrip distance was 8.4 miles.  The outbound hike is all uphill at a pretty good incline but the journey is definitely worth it.  Once we got to Helen Lake, we decided to go slightly further and climb the ridge for even...

Plains of Six Glaciers - Banff
by Athena on Sep 03, 2011
Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Hiking | 5.4 miles
What a fantastic hike!  Highly recommend this one for anyone visiting the area.Caution....the track is hand-drawn and does not accurately depict the actual mileage. We hiked up the Plains of Six Glaciers trail to the Tea House then over to the Lake Agnes Tea House via another trial then back down to the Fairmont Lake Louise Hotel for a total of 8.2 miles.  The stop at the Tea House was refreshing but...

Dolly Sods North Hiking (Bear Rocks)
by Athena on Jul 02, 2011

Hiking | 0.0 miles
A nice loop hike that can be done in a day or over 2 days backpacking.  We started at Bear Rocks parking area and descended into the valley.  We continued up Raven Ridge Trail until we hit the Rocky Ridge Trail.  The views at this point are magnificent.  Along the Rocky Ridge Trail is a great place to stop and have lunch.  After lunch we continued along Rocky Ridge and took Dobbin...

Amazing hike!  What a treat!  I still can't believe Mother Nature does such beautiful things.  It's all up to us to protect it from those that can't appreciate natural beauty. This is a 6 mile hike round trip.  Fairly easy except for a little sand and the navigation is the trouble.  This are is well protected and you cannot go into this area without a permit.  Trust me...they check!  Luckily I got a...

What a great hike!  The Grandview trail is a 6 mile roundtrip hike if you just go to the beginning of the mesa.  We went all the way towards the west arm of the mesa and it was well worth it.Thinking 6 miles round trip would be an moderate day hike....guess what...it wasn't!  Forgetting that the elevation difference is the kicker, it would have been better to do it as a very...

by Athena on Oct 09, 2010

Great hike but no if you are afraid of heights.  This trail isn't as bad as it looks but you must respect the iron rungs and watch your step.  There isn't room for error. Highly recommend that you leave the backpack or anything that will occupy your hands.

Acadia National Park - Ladder Trail to Dorr Mountain
by Athena on Oct 08, 2010
Hiking | 0.0 miles
A nice 5 mile roundtrip hike.  Hiked up Ladder Trail....a stair-stepper trainer for about 0.3 miles straight up along granite steps - a couple of ladders assist the hiker climb over boulders but it is relatively easy.  Then it remains steep but your calves take the hit walking up the pink granite. After the summit at Dorr Mountain (1270ft altitude) descended along the South Ridge trail all the way down to Kane trail...
