Oregon Coast Range: Upper Tualatin River Falls
Cherry Grove, Oregon, United States
Hiking | 0.8 miles
Hiking | 0.8 miles
The goal for this weekend was to find two Tualatin River waterfalls in the steep, dense Oregon coast range. The second was Upper Tualatin River Falls, found here:
http://www.waterfallsnorthwest.com/nws/falls.php?num=4072%20/.There is no "trail" to speak of for this hike. We parked at the end of a gravel road that ended, and walked along the west side of the river. We originally thought the falls were further south, but once we got to the point there...
The goal for this weekend was to find two Tualatin River waterfalls in the steep, dense Oregon coast range. The first was Ki-a-Kuts Falls, a spectacular 45 foot waterfall that plunges through a narrow cleft in a basalt rock cliff. There is no "trail" to speak of for this hike. There is an old logging road to follow for a good part of it, at which point you need to head due south, downhill,...
Oregon Coast Range: Little Luckiamute Falls Found!
Black Rock, Oregon, United States
Hiking | 2.6 miles
Hiking | 2.6 miles
The GPS was going a little crazy with the poor reception, but we finally made it down to the Little Luckiamute Falls (a destination we've tried and failed to reached two times earlier). This terrain was extremely rugged, slippery, and overgrown with all sorts of underbrush. In order to reach the lower falls, we had to cross the river 2.5 times (I ended up wading across when we got there, so I could...
Mount Jefferson Wilderness: Marion Lake & Ann Lake Reunion Tour

Marion Forks, Oregon, United States
Hiking | 7.5 miles
Hiking | 7.5 miles
This is a day hike we took into Marion Lake, which is one of the biggest lakes in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness. We also passed the smaller Ann Lake on the way. The 3-peak mountain you can see in the background is Three Finger Jack.
Gifford Pinchot National Forest: Dog Mountain Summit

Cook, Washington, United States
Hiking | 5.8 miles
Hiking | 5.8 miles
A pretty strenuous climb...This year, we hit it too late to enjoy the wildflowers growing near the summit, but it still provides some stunning views of the Columbia River Gorge.
This hike has a bit of everything, including an AMAZING hike through a large bamboo forest, and a stunning waterfall, as well as several "sacred" pools that could be good for swimming (although not recommended by the park).
Waikoa Pond, or Venus Pool, in southeast Maui, is a naturally formed swimming pool in an incredibly beautiful setting next to the ocean. The pool, in between Hana and Oheo Gulch Pools, is one of a series of waterfalls and pools. Local lore says that in ancient Hawaii only royalty were allowed to use this exquisite site. The freshwater swimming area is a perfect place to spend a secluded day. Sunbathe on the...
Hawai'i: Big Island - Volcanoes National Park: Kīlauea Iki Trail

Volcano, Hawaii, United States
Hiking | 3.7 miles
Hiking | 3.7 miles
This is a moderate 4-mile hike located with the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You start out hiking along the ridge of the crater. About half-way through, you have descended all the way down into the crater, where you can still see gas and smoke escaping.
Hawai'i: Big Island - Pe'epe'e Falls & Boiling Pots

Pi‘ihonua, Hawaii, United States
Hiking | 0.6 miles
Hiking | 0.6 miles
This is a state park, with a decent viewing area to snap a few pictures. If you're up for a short, steep hike, you won't be disappointed!
The view from the bridge crossing the Wailuku River is okay, but if you look closely, there is a decently-cut trail going all the way to the top of the falls.
Oregon Coast Range: Little Luckiamute Trail Bushwhack

Black Rock, Oregon, United States
Hiking | 7.6 miles
Hiking | 7.6 miles
This was an (overly) ambitious plan of attempt to follow the remnants of the old Little Luckiamute Trail from where it starts at Black Rock to its ending point above the Little Luckiamute Falls. We averaged about 0.5 miles per hour, due to (among other things) overgrown thistles, stinging nettles, and lack of any trail maintenance for the last 25 years. We were stopped short about a half-mile from our destination, due to...
Opal Creek Wilderness: Opal Creek Loop

Jawbone Flats (historical), Oregon, United States
Hiking | 7.4 miles
Hiking | 7.4 miles
Quick hike through one of the most crystal-clear rivers in Oregon.
This is a pretty quick day hike, but with almost 1000 feet in elevation gain, not something to be taken lightly. Yosemite is a beautiful park, but next time I'll be going during the week.NOTE: This trip was done prior to having a GPS, thus the tracks and waypoints should not be relied on 100%.
Mount Washington Wilderness: McKenzie River Trail

Belknap Springs, Oregon, United States
Hiking | 11.1 miles
Hiking | 11.1 miles
This is a day hike me and a buddy did in late June along the McKenzie River Trail. This is a popular trail for mountain bikers, but we didn't see a single one. There was a decent amount of snow at the beginning of the trail, so if you don't want to get your feet wet, plan this hike a little later in the summer.NOTE: This trip was done prior to having...
Mount Saint Helens Wilderness: Summit

Harmony Falls Landing, Washington, United States
Hiking | 8.3 miles
Hiking | 8.3 miles
This was a challenging, but not impossible summit hike I took with a few friends in mid-September. The last one mile is worst, as you enter into loose scree until you hit the summit crest.NOTE: This trip was done prior to having a GPS, thus the tracks and waypoints should not be relied on 100%.
This "summit" hike climbs nearly 3000 feet, and is a great test run for some of the other summit hikes in the Oregon/Washington area.If you don't want to scale the entire thing, there is a road that runs nearly to the top, if you're just looking for a great viewpoint to snap some pictures of the surrounding mountains (Hood, Jefferson, Rainier and more).NOTE: This trip was done prior to having a GPS,...
This trip was originally planned as a multi-day backpacking trip, but schedule conflicts were threatening to make us postpone. Instead, we decided to just make a long day hike out of it, which turned out to be extremely challenging, but also one of the most rewarding backpacking trips I've ever done. The weather was fantastic, and we timed the wildflowers perfectly. The only thing regret we had from this trip, was not being...
This is a good day hike we took within the Oregon Gorge. We parked at the Multnomah Falls parking lot, and hiking over to the Wahkeena Falls Trailhead. From there, we hiked up the gorge, eventually catching back up with the main Multnomah Falls trail, and making our way back down to the care.
This was a nice short hike I took in early May. It is quite a bit off the road, but definitely worth the trip.
Mount Hood Wilderness: Heather Canyon Loop

Government Camp, Oregon, United States
Hiking | 10.2 miles
Hiking | 10.2 miles
This is a hike I took in early August 2010 through the Mount Hood Meadows
area. There are many waterfalls to see along this route including
Umbrella Falls, Sahale Falls, and several running run through Heather
Canyon.
