Mount Nelson via western track
by PeterJF on May 10, 2013
Sandy Bay, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 3.0 miles
This is 2-2:30 hours one wayInitially along the gully beside Lambert Creek before climbing to meet Nelson Road.  It is just a short walk to rejoin the track in Rialannah Rd where a pleasant area of bush is walked to the Mount Nelson Signal Station. The first bit of this section is behind houses but they are mostly some distance from the track anyway. All up about 2-2:30 hours for this one...

Hiking | 6.1 miles
The ascent and descent from Mitchells road via Jeffreys Track is quite steep and a little over 2.5 k long.  The descent when the gravel is dry on the lower part is treacherous and with a big packs somewhat dangerous.  In any event it would be quite unappealing for walkers to descend and then return the next day, no matter how enticing accommodation and meals might be.  The only real option would...

Trestle Mountain via Mountain River
by PeterJF on May 15, 2012
Longley Lower, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 4.3 miles
Initially the track up from Mountain River is not unduly steep but that is short lived as 10 minutes from the start it has a decent slope  for the next 30 minutes or so before a 15 minute level section.  On the third creek crossing in becomes quite steep and remains so until meeting the junction with the East West Fire Trail. Part way up there is an old previously disturbed site...

Mt Field, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 5.0 miles
This is a variation to the usual Tarn Shelf walk as it leaves the main shelf  to cross a saddle to the prominent peak overlooking Lake Seal.   There is also a fault line that can be entered  for a close up view. The walk does involve a bit of a trudge up to the Mawson Plateau and the return is back the same way.  From Lake Dobson the good quality track follows the...

Saltwater River, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 5.8 miles
A track runs behind Lime Bay heading east, but the beach can be followed to the end as an option.  Once at the end a track keeps to the top of the cliffs all the way to Monk Bay.  Whitehouse Point is passed then narrow point can be seen and this id the main destination  of the walk.  As it doesn't have an official name I have called it Monk Staff.  Delightful...

St Helens, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 6.6 miles
From the Moulting Bay a track leads along the edge to a creek, which at one stage was bridged but at May 2011 was destroyed by floods and had been washed partly away.  The easy wide track climbs  gently and leads over the hills to Dora Point.  At a junction the right  or southern track follows the coast to Humbug Point.  It is mostly a sandy pleasant track.  From Humbug point a...

Mawson Plateau Traverse
by PeterJF on Mar 06, 2011
Mt Field, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 5.5 miles
Initially the track to Lake Belcher is followed to the saddle below Mawson Plateau. This section is at times quite wet and much is over open moorland with the last short part through snowgum wood.  From there it is a short climb , including parts over boulders  to the plateau followed by a pleasant walk over the top.  This plateau is quite exposed and navigation could be a problem in poor conditions. ...

Hiking | 4.1 miles
Initially the track follows the river and passes an old washed out bridge still with a sign.   This was the original way in before it was destroyed by floods.Soon after a turn is reached and the track crosses an open area of former farmland, then goes through groves of tree ferns and past  immense swamp gums. The falls are within an area of old forest with moss-covered fallen logs, ferns and rainforest plants....

Newdegate Pass
by PeterJF on Jan 08, 2011
Mt Field, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 9.4 miles
With a fine forecast we set off from Lake Dobson, took the Urquhart Track and then endured the Jeep 4WD road to the ski huts.  From here it became pleasant walking again and we decided to head to Newdegate via Tarn Shelf, joined the new boardwalk from Lake Newdegate and spent an enjoyable lunch break amongst the white flowering Cushion Plants, Epacris and colourful Scoparia.  Return was via K Col and the climb over the rocks to the Rodway...

Monash Valley
by PeterJF on Dec 27, 2010
Mt Field, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 3.1 miles
The route to this valley can be varied and there is no definite way in or out, however it is generally easier to walk to the higher parts of Wombat Moor before descending into Monash Valley.  One of the main attractions of the walk is the delightful flowers on the moor and in the valley.   The displays of Richea scoparia from mid December to early to mid January are without doubt some...

by PeterJF on Nov 10, 2010
Mt Field, Tasmania, Australia
Hiking | 5.6 miles
Total time and distance includes ascent of Field East. (aprox 5 hours) Tracked all the way, with the easier direction going in via Windy Moor. From the car park a short track leads to the road which is crossed as is the access way to Lake Fenton to pick up the track that climbs steadily to Windy Moor.  The track over this open plain is obvious and when reaching a rocky area there...

Hiking | 9.3 miles
Starts on old road that passes though farm land then picks up track after crossing a style. The start has been slightly rerouted in recent years. Gentle uphill to a wire gate then turns right crossing a creek before climbing to Raoul Lookout.  The area has a considerable amount of Pimelea Niva  and Pultenaea making a colourful display in November.   From the lookout a descent through Eucalypt and Dogwood (Pomaderris) to a...

Hiking | 4.8 miles
This bushwalk is mostly in the Woodvine Nature Reserve.   This area was bequeathed in July 2001 to Parks and Wildlife by the former owner to ensure that the part that is bush remains that way.  It is 377 hectares and probably some 70-80% of this is relatively untouched bushland which at times has a multitude of birds, adding to the attraction.  The former cleared land is revegetating, but unfortunately much of this...

Hiking | 2.9 miles
This bushwalk included an extension to the western most of the Three Thumbs and a return by the alternative forest loop track..The weather was sunny to start but from time to time cloud blocked off the sun and the cold wind became more noticeable.   A coffee stop was made at Orford on the way home.

Hiking | 5.3 miles
With a fine forecast we headed up the foggy east coast to Orford, which fortunately was free of it. Morning tea in a clearing was made pleasant by the warmth of the sun and the multitude of birds present. A pad was followed to the top of the hill before descending to meet the old coach road on the dry northern slope. From here we went down to end up...

Blue Lake - Carruthers Peak Circuit
by PeterJF on Apr 01, 2010
Thredbo Village, New South Wales, Australia
Hiking | 12.0 miles
A circuit walk initially on a paved track, then more normal bushwalking tracks and eventually along a former road.On this route a direct approach over a valley floor was taken from Muellers Pass to Seamans hut.  This section is off track but little in the way of scrub was encountered.  The conventional route can be used by remaining on the marked and very obvious main track.
