Hiking Trails and Trips
Trips
This was a short hike from a mileage perspective. In driving on the NYS Thruway, I kept looking up at this rock formation and saying to myself "You need to go climb up there". I was also a little slow since it was a fair amount of climbing and rock scrambles. Plus I saw a big rattlesnake and after that I was choosing every step very carefully. I started on the SBM...
I went to explore some of the trails around Monksville reservoir to assess them for connecting Jungle Habitat and Ringwood on an MTB. There are a few level trails and some that are more quad trails, but I did not conclude that there is a great loop that is bikable. I did discover substantial trails that are not on the NYNJTC map though.
It was not in my original plan to bushwhack the return from Sterling Mountain. I was pretty certain that I had a bead on the unmarked woods road that was on the map. But between it being unmarked, no prior footprints in the snow and blowdowns, I lost it. But, I knew the direction I need to head in general. I had to do one cut-back because I started to get into...

Parked at the pull-out atop of Mine Hill Rd. There is limited parking here, but on this cold day with a fresh inch of snow, nobody else was there. The start of the hike on the Mine Hill trail (yellow diamond) was very tricky since it was a sheet of ice. But, we survived and once we got up to the Sackett trail (yellow circle) it was much safer. The rest of...
Parked near the entrance to Nyack Beach State Park and took the following trails: Upper Nyack trail (white) to Long Path (aqua) to Landing Road (paved) to unmarked gravel road to Bike Path and back to parking. It was in the mid-20's and it really wasn't bad since we dressed for the cold. It was also fairly sunny. The coldest part was the walk along the river on the return. The sun was over...
Parked at the old Bear Mountain Toll House on Route 6 and followed the Camp Smith Trail (blue) up above the Hudson River to Anthony's Nose and down to 9D via the Appalachian Trail.
This was a hike in the "virgin" snow. It just snowed last night. The entire length of this hike my footprints were the only human tracks. Other than that it was deer and rabbit tracks. I parked at end of Johnsontown Rd. I went up Blue disc trail to Almost Perpindicular and then continued through Elbow's Brush and out to Cladius SMith's Den. Tuxedo-Mt Ivy trail intersects here. I left the Den on TMI...
Due to the snow cover, windfalls and climbing this turned out to be a little tougher than expected. Definitely not a very exciting hike from the stand-point of views, etc. But, it was good exercise and serenity. For the 1st 75% of the hike there was no sign of humanity. The only tracks in the snow were deer, rabbit and coyote. This hike follows the Red Back trail from South Gate Rd...
The plan was originally to loop north through the Long Pond Iron Works (LPIW) on the Hasenclever Iron trail, but we found out the bridge over the Wanaque river is still out back from Hurricane Irene. So, we went and checked out the falls and then doubled back for a loop around Monksville Reservoir to the south instead. This involved taking the Hewitt-Butler (blue) and Highlands (teal) near the LPIW on Greenwood...
Parked by the police HQ off exit 2 of PIP. Went north on Long Path until it joined with the Forest View trail. Then split to Forest View only down to the base of the cliffs and went south on the Shore Trail. Took this all the way down to the Boat Basin and then went up the Closter Dock trail. At the top of the climb we followed the LP again...
Parked on 9W and went up the Timp-Torne (blue) trail along various parts of the old Dunderberg railway on Dunderberg mountain with various views south on the Hudson. After the 2nd tunnel and crossing the stream, took a right on the unmarked Jones trail to the T intersection and then went left. Shortly thereafter took a right on Ramapo-Dunderberg (red/white). Followed this all the way back past various viewpoints to the west,...
