The Salem Ferry was our $15 one-way method of choice to travel to Salem for Halloween since driving in on the weekend before is not an option. It only takes an hour and although cool in October it is a great view of the North Shore. They serve beer on board so that's a bonus.
You can drive or walk aboard the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry if you need to cross Long Island Sound. It sure beats driving around through New York City and if you are, hopefully, not the driver they have a bar on board....and by the way, I've never been more sure that the GPS elevation readings on my iPhone are off. It should have started and ended at zero feet above sea level!
