Traversing the entire Gabrielino Trail in the San Gabriel mountains behind LA, on a three day backpack. This leg is the most popular, but the section between Switzer and Oakwild is very lightly traveled, and stunningly beautiful. Take a side trip down Royal Gorge. You won't regret it!

Traversing the entire Gabrielino Trail in the San Gabriel mountains behind LA, on a three day backpack. You can overnight in Spruce Grove if you get a late start, but Devore is secluded, well kept, and seldom used. It will treat you to a wonderful night.

K and I saw first hand how the Kalalau trail can go from an enjoyable tropical outing, to a life threatening nightmare in a matter of hours.All started nicely enough. It was my birthday, and we successfully navigated getting to the trailhead using a bus from Kapa'a and hitching it from Hanalei. There had been rains off and on for a few days, but nothing major.We entered the trail full of hope...
