Lulu Mountain (12,228') Loop, Continental Divide
by jimlarkey on May 12, 2013
Walden, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 7.0 miles
Lulu Mountain, revisited...the 2011 attempt was unsuccessful.  The weather in Feb 2011 was humbling, and resulted in the title changed to "Thunder Pass Loop", the best we could do.This time around the Ol' Gal smiled on us, and permitted us to visit Her summit.  The weather, and the snow conditions were ideal. The American Lakes area (aka Michigan Lakes) is one of the most scenic in the Cameron Pass vicinity.  Great views of the...

Green Mountain Trail, Kawuneeche Valley, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 28, 2013
Gaskil, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 4.1 miles
Another easy snowshoe in RMNP, trail-head well marked.  Final destination was the Big Meadows, fed by the Tonahutu Creek. The elk were in the low-country, so all we saw was a lot of moose tracks.  And plenty of snow.Never did find the 2 cabins remains at the Big Meadows.  Probably didn't go far enough.

Baker Gulch, Kawuneeche Valley, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 27, 2013
Gaskil, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 2.8 miles
The Baker Gulch TH is well marked, and starts in the Kawuneeche Valley, in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park.  Starting out, you'll cross a large, open meadow created by the Colorado River.About a 1/4 mile from the TH, the trail splits: Bowen Gulch to the left, Baker Gulch to the right.  3/4 mile from the TH, you'll leave RMNP, and enter the Never Summer Wilderness. It was a windy and cold day.  We didn't feel...

Embryo Lake (10,380') Revisited, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 23, 2013
Beaver Point, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 5.8 miles
Another great day in the high-country...enjoying the mountain weather that Mother Nature brewed for us.  It's just plain awesome to see the chaotic clouds of spindrift coming off the Divide. My last snowshoe visit to Embryo Lake was 3 years ago, and was pretty much on trail.  This trip was mostly off-trail, and offered a "tour de ponds", hitting in addition to the Loch, "Serendipity", "Little Bear", and a couple of other unnamed shallow,...

East Glacier Knob (10,225') Loop, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 07, 2013
Estes Park, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 3.1 miles
It was 3 years and 1 day since last I was on the summit of East Glacier Knob, going off-trail and following a route described by Lisa Foster.  The goal this time was to explore the possibility of a different off-trail route to the top, which from the digital resources, appeared easier.Bottom line: It took the same time (1 hour) to ascend from the Fire Trail, same distance (0.5 mi.), and about...

McGregor Mountain (10,486'), RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 29, 2012
Fall River Estates Subdivision, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 7.5 miles
I had the distinct honor of climbing McGregor Mountain with a real, true, Scotsman!  And...what's in an "A"?I asked him "what's the difference between a Mc.... and a Mac....?"   He said the Mac usually refers to Scottish origin, and the Mc to Irish origin. So the question I ask, why is the mountain at the base of the old MacGregor Ranch, an early Estes Valley homesteader, named McGregor (note lack of "a")?...

Emerald Mountain (9,237'), West Slope, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 25, 2012
Beaver Point, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 2.1 miles
Mother Nature displaying her power and beauty...high winds on the Continental Divide.  We were fortunate to be at a lower elevation, enjoying her display. This is the second climb of the day.  Earlier in the morning we summited Steep Mountain, and drove to the Bear Lake Shuttle Parking Lot to begin our climb of the west slope.  Last year I climbed Emerald Mountain from the East Portal side, as a traverse.  Since the...

Steep Mountain (9,538') East Slope, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 25, 2012
Beaver Point, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 2.6 miles
The normal approach to Steep Mountain is on the south slope.  We chose to do a different approach: go off-trail, and bush-whack up the forested east slope. The east face is the leeward slope, so the snow was deep.  The Front Range is currently under a "Considerable" avalanche danger state.  Partway up the 30º slope, we experienced a couple of "whoomphs", with fracture lines evident in the 2" slabs.  The layer below was...

Storm Mountain (9,918'), Near Drake
by jimlarkey on Feb 16, 2012
Drake, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 4.4 miles
Our plan was to follow Foggy Park Rd (FR 153) part way, the go off-trail and ascend the south shoulder of Storm Mountain to the summit, then descend east shoulder back to the cars.  The weather was great, and the snow deep on the N'ly slopes. There are a number of old mines in the area, and for the history buffs, you might want to explore some of the history of the Galuchie Park...

Lily Mountain (9,786'), Winter Climb From Lily Lake, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 09, 2012
Estes Park, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 3.7 miles
Ever have that "I should not be here" moment?  Lily Mountain Trail is an easy summer dayhike, with a little scramble at the summit.  Snow adds a little more difficulty, and doing Lily mountain from Lily Lake climbers trail makes it a totally different experience.I climbed this route in May of 2011, when the slopes were pretty snow-free, an easy Class-3 climb.  Our encounter with sugar-sand snow on the 35º granite slabs was unexpected....

Glacier Gorge Blow-down, Nov 2011 Microburst
by jimlarkey on Jan 19, 2012
Estes Park, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 5.9 miles
Amazing...trees that were bigger than you could hug, were snapped off or uprooted.  The blow-down resulted from a November 21, 2011 microburst that hit the Glacier Gorge area of Rocky Mountain National Park.We were going to try and hike through it to reach Black Lake, but the tangle of logs, branches made it nearly impassible.  And one questions the wisdom of passing under partially supported trees under high wind conditions.  We decided to turn back....

"Thunder" (10,134') & "Lightning" (10,570') Peaks, Point-to-Point, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Apr 28, 2011
Beaver Point, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 6.0 miles
Two unofficially named peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), will offer you a challenge in route finding, and scrambling.  Once on the summit, you'll be rewarded with one of the best vantage points to see the features of RMNP.We chose to do a point-to-point snowshoe, starting at the Lily Lake Trail-head, which is 800' higher than our exit at the East Portal Trail-head.  At about mile 1.7, we left the Storm...

Storm Pass - Estes Cone, Point-to-Point Snowshoe, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Mar 19, 2011

Snowshoeing | 8.1 miles
Previously, I had done loop hikes to Storm Pass and Estes Cone from the following points:Lily Lake trail-head, 7.5 milesStorm Pass trail-head, 8.8 milesLongs Peak trailhead, 6.3 milesThis opportunity was a "connect the points" point-to-point snowshoe from the Longs Peak to Storm Pass trail-heads, with a fun climb to the summit of Estes Cone (11,006')....and something different, a clear day on the summit!  It was great to be on the summit, and...

Emerald Mountain (9,237'),
by jimlarkey on Feb 27, 2011
Beaver Point, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 2.6 miles
Emerald Mountain (9,237') is one of the many low elevation knobs in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP).  It is located near the campus of the YMCA of the Rockies, so a winter climb is a little quieter than summer, when YMCA campers are scrambling over the slopes. We decided to leave our snowshoes at home, thinking that snow would not be a factor with such a low elevation climb....WRONG!  We were post-holing at...

East Inlet Trail, Rocky Mountain National Park
by jimlarkey on Feb 24, 2011
Grand Lake, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 5.2 miles
The East Inlet is a drainage on the westerly side of the Continental Divide, and empties into Grand Lake.  The trail-head is in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) Wilderness area, and near the West Portal of the 13-mile-long Adams Tunnel.  This buried aqueduct is a diversion channel that carries water under the Continental Divide,  from the west to the east slope.  The East Portal is near the YMCA camp.About 1/4 mile from...

Thunder Pass Loop (11,331'), Continental Divide
by jimlarkey on Feb 20, 2011
Willey Lumber Camp, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 8.3 miles
15°F, 50-60 mph wind on the Continental Divide....our goal was to summit Lulu Mountain (12,228'), not just reach Thunder Pass (11,331').  But it became apparent to us that to finish the 900' climb to the summit in the conditions we encountered on the Pass, we would need another 2 hours.  Those 2 hours would mean headlamps.A little over a year ago, we'd been in this basin before, the American Lakes area, but...

Hidden Valley Loop, Trail Ridge Rd, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 17, 2011
Hidden Valley, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 5.3 miles
Hidden Valley is an old lift-operated downhill ski resort (Ski Estes Park) that operated between 1955 - 1991 along U.S. 34, five miles (8 km) west of Estes Park.  It was the trailhead for our snowshoe to Rainbow Curve, a pullout along Trail Ridge Rd (US-34) with rewarding views of the Mummy Range. We chose to make a loop out of the hike, ascending one ski run, and descending another.  Unfortunately, the weather was...

Battle Mountain (12,044') - Aborted, RMNP, Boulder Brook Trail
by jimlarkey on Feb 13, 2011
Beaver Point, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 7.2 miles
...."Close, but no cigars!"  We came within 1-1/2 trail-miles of reaching the summit of Battle Mountain, but we never got above treeline.  One of the most dynamic days in the high-country.  Winds were forecasted to hit 70 mph on the Divide, and we saw it.We ascended a little used Boulder Brook Trail, from the Storm Pass trailhead.  With the fresh blown snow, we had to break trail most of the way with...

Lake Helene - Aborted, RMNP
by jimlarkey on Feb 10, 2011
Estes Park, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 6.1 miles
Our goal was to reach Lake Helene, a short easy hike normally.  But under the conditions, we opted to turn around at the near side of Two Rivers Lake.  The wind was ferocious.
