Mileage for this hike is a bit untrustworthy because the canyon walls can really mess with your GPS (note the stats for my trip - 130mph is a wee bit fast for me). The hike from the parking lot to the end of the maintained trail is somewhere in the 6.6 (what the signs at the trailhead say) to 9.1 mile (what my GPS measured) range. Searching everytrail for other versions of...
Walking from Skyland, across the Skyline Drive to the Whiteoak Canyon Trailhead, to the Limberlost Loop.
Hike down a short, a (maybe) steep trail to a remote black sand and cobble beach. Great views.
Descend through rain forest into an old (but still steaming) caldera. It rained most of the walk, but that also meant we a had nearly constant view of a rainbow within the caldera.
Short, easy walk over old lava flows. The small loop at the midpoint (before you retrace your hike out) is a boardwalk around/through petroglyphs carved into the rocks.
The views into the Kalalau Valley are astounding. You can walk about half of what this track covers without worrying too much about the trail conditions. The further you go, however, the more interesting it gets. The trail continued into the Alaka'i Swamp, but we found the slippery wet clay too much for us. We turned around when we reached the junction with the Alaka'i Swamp Trail after climbing multiple "mud stairs". The...
I short hike down a fire road to the *top* of a small waterfall.
Great hike! Lots of magnificent views to the west. I have another version of this hike that starts and ends at a slightly different place in Skyland. This version is about a half mile longer.
Simple walk through forest. One nice view to the west from Dickey Hill. On the east side of Dickey Hill the trail takes you through the remnants of an old farm - the barn is still standing, but only the foundation remains of the house.
Out and back on the AT. Nice view at the top, just off the AT.
