Short jog on the AT. Not a particularly beautiful section, but you cross under I-81, which is interesting.
Appalachian Trail - US 620 to Dragon's Tooth

Catawba, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 11.0 miles
Trail running | 11.0 miles
Morning trail run/hike up to Dragon's Tooth. This is the less frequented way to the top of the Tooth, most opting to take the shorter route from the trail head off of Rt 311. This was a fairly steep hike and rocky in sections. The AT thru-hikers were in full swing, I saw about 12-13. I talked with one named Tin Man and heard of another, Grasshopper. I also learned that there...

Trail running | 5.6 miles
Trail run while on vacation in Bethany Beach. This area was okay, the trails are mostly converted dirt roads. There is a nice view of Beach Cove to the north.

The trail is well-maintained, although sandy in a few spots. The boardwalk areas are very nice.

Ocean View, Delaware, United States
Trail running | 3.2 miles
Trail running | 3.2 miles
I was in the area for an early vacation. The beaches were cold, but the weather was perfect for hiking/running. The trails were well maintained and several boardwalk lookouts provided great views. I saw a wild turkey, an osprey, and a red-winged blackbird.
Holts Landing State Park - Hiking Trails

Ocean View, Delaware, United States
Trail running | 3.0 miles
Trail running | 3.0 miles
In Bethany Beach for an early vacation. The beach was cold, but the trails were just right. In most spots the trails were well maintained. However, there were a few issues. The map provided by the state park has a small looping trail in the northwest that was not found. There was also a footbridge out on the northern shore that could prove frustrating. It took a pretty good leap to avoid...
Appalachian Trail - US 620 to US 621 (Brush Mtn Summit and Audie Murphy Monument)

Catawba, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 7.5 miles
Trail running | 7.5 miles
This section of the AT takes you up and over Brush Mtn. There is a bit of WWII history on this mountain. The most decorated soldier of WWII was Audie Murphy, included in his awards were the Silver Star and Medal of Honor. He died in 1971 when his private plane crashed into this mountain. There is now a monument on the top of the mountain in his memory. It is no...
Appalachian Trail - US 311 to Dragon's Tooth Parking Lot

Catawba, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 6.7 miles
Trail running | 6.7 miles
I took a trail run on the AT from US 311 to the Dragon's Tooth Parking Lot. The last 1/2 mile was on the Boy Scout Trail. The first 3 miles is a bumpy up and down ridge run. Then you descend the ridge and enter into some pastureland, which was actually quite scenic. There are several stiles to manage in this section. Cross two roads and get ready to start ascending...
Appalachian Trail - Black Horse Gap to US 11

Troutville, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 12.0 miles
Trail running | 12.0 miles
Went for a trail run on the AT. Getting up Fullhart Knob is a steep 2 to 3 mile challenge, but the rest is pretty easy going. The best view was in a cow pasture towards the end of the run.
Green Hill Park - Roanoke River Greenway, Pawpaw Trail, Craig Climb, Meadowview Loop, and Walton Way

Salem, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 3.7 miles
Trail running | 3.7 miles
There is nearly one mile of paved trail on the Roanoke River Greenway and a couple miles of hiking trails in Green Hill Park. I did a little trail run/hike on snow-covered ground. It was peaceful and quiet and most enjoyable.
Blue Ridge Parkway - Steward's Knob Trails
Vinton, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 5.5 miles
Trail running | 5.5 miles
A training run took me to this trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway. The yellow blazed trail, which begins at the Steward's Knob Overlook is a multi-use horse and hiking trail. The trail parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway and is mostly flat. I also added a very steep unmarked trail up the Steward's Knob ridgeline to my route.
Mill Mountain - Wood Thrush, Virginia Pine, Ridgeline, and Star Trails

Roanoke, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 6.4 miles
Trail running | 6.4 miles
I had a trail run and decided to visit more of the trails on Mill Mountain. The trails are kept in fairly good condition and it is nice to only have to travel a few minutes to be in the woods.
Appalachian Trail - Carvins Cove and Hay Rock Overlook

Daleville, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 11.0 miles
Trail running | 11.0 miles
I had another training run for my marathon. I've been wanting to hike the Carvin's Cove / Hay Rock Overlook section of the AT. The trail was a little muddy over the first mile due to heavy rains from last night, but once I gained a little elevation, the trail was beautiful. The overlooks into Carvin's Cove were great. Hay Rock is also definitely worth the trip.
Mill Mountain - Big Sunny and Riser Trails

Roanoke, Virginia, United States
Trail running | 2.2 miles
Trail running | 2.2 miles
During a marathon training run, I ran around some of the trails on Mill Mountain.
