Overview: This is a great climb over two peaks to get to the highest point in New England. You will ascend Edmand's Path to the intersection with the Crawford Path over the Southern Presidential Ridge. On the way up you will have sweeping views to the north and may even see the train on the Cog Railway steaming up the mountain. Once on the ridge you'll jog over to get to the summit of Eisenhower at 4,761 feet and then continue on over Monroe at 5,385' past a very cool alpine lake and AMC hut to your final destination, Mt. Washington at 6,288 feet!

Because Mt. Washington has a scenice highway to the top you have several options. You can arrange for friends/family to pick you up at the top and drive you down saving your knees. On the other hand, if you are out to include these mountains in your peak bagging lists and want to join any of the climbing clubs and check these off you need to hike yourself back down for the climb to be considered legit.

Tips: Edmands Path Trailhead:
This trailhead is off of the Mt. Clinton Road which leaves Rte 302 just south of Bretton Woods across from Saco Lake.

There is a $3 fee to park here for the day.

Crawford Path Intersection

Here the Edmand's Trail intersects the Crawford Trail just north of the summit of Eisenhower. Drop any heavy stuff you have, except your camera and run up the short distance to the top of Mt. Eisenhower and back to the intersection making sure to snap a few pics of yourself at the summit.

Take some time to relax inside this hut out of the wind (and for us, wet weather).

Summit of New England

You are now standing at the highest point in New England (also the only one over 6,000 feet) at 6,288. For years the summit of the mountain held the highest recorded wind speed so be prepared while climbing up this massive mountain. There is an information center and even a cafe inside. You'll probably be surrounded by tourists who took the easy way up - the Mt. Washington Highway. For those climbers without family waiting for them in a warm car you should get a bite to eat then turn arond and head exactly the same way back to your car at the trailhead. For the lucky ones who love their knees, catch a ride down but remember you can't count the mountain as climbed on any official list without also descending it!
