The Peak Tram

Start with a spellbinding ride on the Peak Tram, which offers stunning views as it climbs 373 meters (about 1,200 feet) to the top of Hong Kong Island.

Originally created for the exclusive use of the British governor and the wealthy Peak residents when it opened in 1888, today it remains highly trafficked and is one of the Hong's most famous attractions.

The trip takes only eight minutes but the wait can be unbearable during peak weekend hours. Visit weekday mornings to avoid the crowds.

The Peak Tram departs within 10- to 15-minute intervals from the Lower Peak Tram Terminus on Garden Road in Central. Fares can be paid with exact change or an Octopus card.

Victoria Peak (The Peak)

Fabulous views meet you when you reach The Peak. Once you arrive, it is clear why this is one of Asia's most popular destinations.

The Peak Tower is a striking landmark boasting gorgeous views of Victoria Harbour and Kowloon; it reopened in 1997 after a massive redesign by British architect Terry Farrell. The stunning, modern building is built in the shape of a wok and has seven floors.

It has a number of viewing areas and the highest 360-degree viewing platform--The Sky Terrace--is perfect for a photo. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops.

Next door, the Peak Galleria also has some nice viewing areas, which are typically less crowded. Enjoy walking around.

The views are equally impressive day or night.

Hong Kong Trail (Lugard Road)

The Hong Kong trail is a loop around the Peak that runs about 40-60 minutes. It is an excellent way to experience the Peak scenery and get close to nature.

Exit the Mount Austin Playground and keep left until you meet Lugard Road. From there you will begin the loop around the Peak. Halfway through your walk, at the end of Lugard Road, turn into Harlech Road, which brings you back to your original starting point.

The tour takes you past a picnic area and through the Peak's luxury residences.

The Peak Outlook

This restaurant has a beautiful garden terrace with views of Aberdeen. It is an oasis of calm amid the crowds that gather at The Peak and a popular breakfast spot.

The restaurant is family friendly but, be warned, the food is a bit pricier than the surrounding restaurants. Choose one of those if you want a quick bite, but go here if you want a memorable meal.

The menu reflects Hong Kong's historic colonial past and Chinese roots with signature dishes such as Hainan chicken rice and British bread and butter pudding.

This is the site of the former historic Peak Café, which opened in 1947 and still retains a connection to its past.

Option #1: If you are ready to return to Central after a nice long meal, head out the door and cross the street to the Peak Tram.

Option #2: If want to experience the well-traveled walk down to the Reservoir, and don't mind hopping a bus at the end, continue on.

Pok Fu Lam Reservoir

Exit out of the Peak Outlook, with the restaurant on your right, and walk down the hill following the signs to Pok Fu Lam Reservoir. Take the wooded path as it descends toward Pok Fu Lam Country Park. The views are beautiful and the walk is invigorating.

The should take about 45 minutes.

The Tram ride is surely a must do in Hongkong. But sometimes the queque is very long. So if you want to avoid quequeing and want to spend more times on the peak: take bus 6 from central. You get same stunning views over Hongkong and waiting time is zero.
