Duration: Full day

Overview: Icehouse Canyon, nestled among cedar and pine, is a popular spot for casual hikers to enjoy alpine scenery and a year round stream. It is also served to more experienced hikers as a gateway to peaks in the Cucamonga Wilderness including the Three Tee’s Trail which summits Timber, Telegraph, and Thunder Mountains.

From Icehouse trailhead, it is 3.6 miles to Icehouse Saddle, and an additional 5.6 miles to summit the three peaks to Baldy Notch. From Baldy Notch, you can walk down the access road or take the chairlift down during hours of operation. After reaching the base of Mt. Baldy (Manker Flat), the last 2.5 miles is paved back to the trailhead. This trip is a 14 mile loop, total. Another option is to backtrack the Three Tee's Trail after reaching Thunder Mtn.

Getting to Icehouse Saddle is good exercise, but the Three Tee's Trail is strenuous. A lot of uphill and downhill hiking is required to pass over the prominences. The tallest is Telegraph Peak, at 8,985 ft.

Tips: Display an Adventure Pass at the Icehouse parking lot. The Mt. Baldy Visitor Center sells them, maps, and issues permits required for day and overnight use in Cucamonga Wilderness. The rangers are willing to leave permits on the bulletin board outside of normal business hours if you call ahead.

The Mt. Baldy chairlift operates during the summer. See link under 'Other Resources' for their schedule and ticket prices

Bring a full day's worth of water. The last opportunity to filter water is at Columbine Spring, which is only 2.4 miles from the trailhead.

Pack some snacks, a flashlight, and thermal layers even during summer months. Keep the 10 essentials handy.

Icehouse Canyon Trailhead

Before embarking, display a National Forest Adventure Pass in your vehicle. There is a big parking lot at the trailhead on Icehouse Canyon Rd. Make sure to have a permit issued by Mt. Baldy Visitor Center, which is 1.5 miles before the trailhead in Baldy Village.

Icehouse Creek

A year round stream flows through Icehouse Canyon, and the trail follows it for the first 2 miles. New Zealand Mudsnails have found their way into the water, so be sure to wash your boots if you go wading after your visit.

Icehouse Cabins

A number of private cabins reside along the first mile of trail, including ones that are being left to the elements.

View of Telegraph Peak

After descending a few hundred feet from Timber Mtn, you'll start the ascent of Telegraph Peak. This presents a number of grueling switchbacks and a false summit. However, there are spectacular views of San Bernardino National Forest to the east.

Top of Telegraph Peak

At an obvious junction, take a right to the top of Telegraph Peak, elevation 8,985 ft. There is a summit register and USGS marker. The peak has an unrivaled view of Mt. San Antonio (Mt. Baldy). There are hazardous slide areas that run off of the peak, so be careful. After taking in the view, backtrack to the junction and continue toward Thunder Mountain.

Note: the author was on top of the peak during sunset, and does not recommend recreating this attempt. From this point, it is still a long journey back to the trailhead. Don't be caught off guard by darkness. Backpacker Magazine reports that "fatigue, darkness, and insufficient equipment accounted for about 42 percent of SAR calls" (March 2011).
