Rating:

Moderate. Steep, narrow and rocky in places. Last part of route is a narrow shelf road. Prone to washouts and rock slides. Suitable for aggressive stock SUVs with high clearance, low range and skid plates.

Tips: Stay on road at all times. You are surrounded by wilderness. If you just want to visit Cerro Gordo Ghost Town without the 4-wheeling, drive up Cerro Gordo Road from Highway 136 just south of Keeler. Take time to visit Keeler, too. It’s nearly a ghost town with interesting things to see. For information on Cerro Gordo Mines and Ghost Town go to www.cerrogordo.us.

Keeler

Descend maintained Cerro Gordo Road from ghost town. Road ends just south of small town of Keeler on Highway 136. If you just want to visit the ghost town without the more difficult 4-wheeling, you can just start here and drive uphill. It's easy in the summer when all the snow has melted.
