A loop trail on the northeast side of Mt. Rainier to Burroughs Mountain & Frozen Lake with a side trip to Mt. Freemont

Overview: This is a great loop hike that will take you to a fire tower, several alpine lakes and a close up view of Mt. Rainier from the top of Burroughs Mountain with a return on the famous Wonderland Trail. The trails are easy to follow and the views are spectacular. Bring a camera.

Tips: Take the Sunrise Park Road to its end from Rte. 410 in Rainier National Park. There are campsites and the parking is free but you will have to pay a fee to get into the park.

Parking & Campsites

Here you can camp overnight before you take your hike early the next morning. You will head uphill then take a left headed west along the Sourdough Ridge Trail which will take you to Frozen Lake.

Frozen Lake & the Mt. Fremont Lookout Trail

Take a left here and head out on the Lookout Trail towards the Fremont lookout Tower.

Fremont Lookout Tower

Here is the spectacular view of Mt. Rainier's northeastern face from the Fremont Lookout Tower. When you are done taking photos head back to frozen lake and head out on the Burroughs Mountain Trail for an even closer view of Rainier.

Sunrise Trail Junction

Continue up the ridge to the top of Burroughs Mountain for another spectacular view of Mt. Rainier. When you get back here head south on the Sunrise Rim Trail.

Burroughs Mountain Summit

At 7,828 feet you are at the summit of the very broad Burroughs Mountain. You will have a very close up view of Mt. Rainier from this point as well as the small Inter Glacier which is draining into the Glacier Basin below you to the south. From here head back to the Sunrise trail and follow that down past Shadow Lake to the Wonderland Trail and your car.

Wonderland Trail

Here you will connect with the Wonderland Trail which you will follow all the way back down to Sunrise Park.
