Overview: Hollywood--nicknamed Tinseltown--might sound more glamorous than it looks (at least to first-time visitors). But while chances are slim you'll spot celebrities (although it could happen), there's a definite gritty charm that makes this a cool neighborhood to visit.

The heart of Hollywood is bordered roughly on the north and east by Cahuenga Boulevard, on the west by Highland Avenue and on the south by Franklin Avenue. But it's Sunset Strip and Hollywood Boulevard (who hasn't heard of Hollywood & Vine?) that get top billing.

See street performers dressed as action heroes and browse through shops stuffed with trinkets, posters and T-shirts on Hollywood Boulevard.

When you look beyond the street traffic, crowded sidewalks and neon signs, you'll discover Hollywood's glittering history. Learn more about this famous town and get insider's tips about where to shop, dine and play with guided walking and theater tours on Hollywood Boulevard.

It wasn't until 1920 that this sleepy neighborhood evolved into a world-famous film industry, although many studios have since relocated to adjacent L.A. suburbs.

In the last 10 years, Hollywood has undergone major gentrification to help polish Tinseltown's aging facade. The facelift has worked wonders to attract more visitors. And that's a wrap!

Tips: 1. Park at the Hollywood & Highland structure. You'll be in the hub of the action. Shop or dine at the complex and get your parking ticket validated.
2. Wear good walking shoes to explore Hollywood on foot.
3. There are numerous places to eat but if you're traveling with kids--or you're craving a Hollywood top dog--drive to Pink's Hot Dogs on La Brea (watch for celebs) or Carney's restaurant housed in a train car on Sunset Strip.
4. If you plan to visit many attractions in the Hollywood and L.A. areas, consider buying a Go Los Angeles card, which gives you free or discounted entry to museums, theme parks and attractions.

Hollywood & Highland complex

Find a spot in the complex's parking structure, centrally located to major Hollywood landmarks. Get your ticket validated by making a purchase at the complex.

This is a good starting and ending point for your tour. Shop, dine or bowl at Lucky Strike Lanes, a mellow scene by day and a hot spot at night. California Pizza Kitchen and Grill on Hollywood are among the many restaurants to choose from.

Walk to the back of the center's main plaza for views of the Hollywood sign.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

You're in the heart of the city when you stroll along famous Hollywood Boulevard. The Walk of Fame consists of 2,000-plus, five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars bearing celebrity names. The stars adorn both sides of the pavement along Hollywood Boulevard, beginning at La Brea Avenue and continuing 15 blocks down on Vine Street. The stars continue for three more blocks on Vine Street--two blocks south and one block north of Hollywood Boulevard.

To follow the Walk of Fame from start to finish, turn right on foot from the Hollywood & Highland complex to reach La Brea Avenue. At La Brea (or earlier if you choose) cross the street to the other side of Hollywood Boulevard to see more stars' names.

The Walk of Fame was created in 1958 as a tribute to actors, musicians, producers and others in the entertainment industry. Director Stanley Kramer's star was the first to be installed. On average, two new stars are added monthly.

El Capitan Theatre

Across from Grauman's Chinese Theatre is Disney's El Capitan, showing first-run Disney movies. This is a fun place to see a movie--with or without kids. The theater, which debuted in 1926 as Hollywood's First Home of Spoken Drama, also hosts live stage shows.

Got a sweet tooth? Drop by the adjacent Disney's Soda Fountain & Studio Store for yummy shakes and sundaes. The diner also serves waffles and sandwiches. While here, shop for Disney souvenirs.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre

Once you exit the Hollywood & Highland complex, go next door to the Grauman's Chinese Theatre. This is a good place to begin a walking tour of historic landmarks along Hollywood Boulevard.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre, which debuted May 18, 1927, continues to be a popular venue for studio premieres. Catch a movie or take a few minutes to admire the stone-carved dragon, temple bells, pagodas and other artifacts.
Look for the "Harry Potter" stars' cement hand, foot and wand prints among the many others in the forecourt.
