Difficulty: Difficult
Length: 5.3 miles / 8.5 km
Duration: Half day
Dog Friendly

Overview: Due to its close proximity to Denver, this trail sees very heavy use. In the last few years, many large boulders have been exposed, creating near extreme conditions. A previously seldom-used side road at the bottom has now become the main trail featuring the daunting first obstacle. The always-challenging “Rock Garden” is at least twice as difficult as it was a few years ago. The trail climbs straight up the mountain and features high views of the I-70 corridor and Georgetown. High Point 11,050 ft., Best time to go: Late June-early October. Located in Arapaho National Forest. For current conditions call Clear Creek Ranger District (303) 567-3000.

Rating:

Difficult. Short sections of moderate road connect a series of steep boulder challenges. Highly modified vehicles only. Lockers are a must. Unlicensed vehicles are allowed, but trying to get an ATV or UTV up this trail would be almost impossible.
This trail is one of 100 trails from the book Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4WD Trails, available at http://www.funtreks.com

Tips: Don’t even think about taking a stock SUV on this trail. You must have a well-equipped modified vehicle and lots of hardcore driving experience. Much of this trail crosses private property, so stay of the main route at all times.
