This fashionable neighborhood is sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding areas by a railway line and is blessed with relatively quiet streets and a lingering legacy of a bohemian past. It was once the home of famous literati such as poets W.B. Yeats and Sylvia Plath and now is home to politician David Milliband and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

The main point of interest here is its chic shops and cozy cafes: Try the Russian caravan tea in Troika or the sublime apple cake in the Primrose Patisserie. There are plenty of traditional English pubs here, too, to whet your whistle: the Landsdowne at or the Engineer are particularly good.

Then take a walk up the hill itself and on a clear day take in a stunning view of central London to the southeast: a panorama peppered with landmarks including St. Paul's Cathedral, the BT Tower, the Gherkin and the Millennium Wheel.

Primrose Patisserie

This stunning park that stretches from central London north to Camden was originally appropriated by Henry VIII for use as a hunting ground. Then renowned architect John Nash was famously commissioned by the Prince Regent at the beginning of the 19th century to design Regent's Park and the imposing surrounding curved terraces.

The design for the park was geographically much as we see it today, as are the lake, inner roads and "circuses" (circular areas). It houses stunning swathes of green playing fields, rose gardens and a boating lake where you can serenely dabble with the ducks.

Regent's Park has a number of restaurants and snack bars in its grounds, including the Boathouse Café with views over the lake from the large terrace seating area and the Honest Sausage, purveyor of organic sausage sandwiches.

The prime attraction within the park is London Zoo, where there are more than 650 different species of animals to discover, including camels, tigers, giraffes, sloths, pelicans, bird-eating spiders, pythons, seahorses and lions.

Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, set up the Zoological Society of London in Regent's Park in 1826 and the much-anticipated zoo launched in 1847. The Victorian public were wowed by exotic animals, including a hippopotamus and an elephant. Today the offering is no less awe inspiring.

Lord's is the spiritual home of cricket and is famous for safeguarding the rules of the great game. As well as playing host to some of the best cricket in the world, the sports ground is also the setting for the state-of-the-art MCC Cricket Academy, the unrivaled MCC Library and the informative MCC Museum, whose exhibits include the Wisden Trophy and the Ashes urn.

Traditionalists and modernists alike are fans of the Media Centre, erected in 1999. This stunning raised pod floats 60 feet above the playing area and is recognized as one of the architectural wonders of modern London.

The Abbey Road zebra crossing is famous worldwide as the spot captured on the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album cover. Fans of the fab four come from across the globe to write on the wall nearby and pose for photographs imitating the image of Paul, John, George and Ringo strolling across the road.

Little Venice is the point where the Grand Union canal meets the Regent's Canal. Here you can stroll along the canal footpath. It's a tranquil spot with colorful houseboats docked all along the towpath and Londoners lazily enjoying its charms.

There are several places to stop and watch the world go by. Waterside Cafe is on a barge overlooking Browning Island, serving paninis, pasta and soup for reasonable prices. The Bridge House Pub is a charming refuge where you can enjoy good beers, wines, traditional English food and perhaps a bit of entertainment at its upstairs theater.
