Presidio Bay Area Ridge Trail

Overview: The entire bay area ridge trail is about 510 miles long and circles the entire bay. This short section winds through San Francisco's Presidio District and has some great views of the bay as well as nice walks through large trees.

Near the middle you can take a detour to the National Cemetery Overlook with views of the bay and the golden gate bridge.

The final section runs along the Coastal Trail ending at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Trailhead

You will find the trailhead to this section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail near the entrance to the golf course parking lot. Follow the paved trail which will soon lead you under some massive trees the line either side of the trail.

National Cemetery Overlook

There is a short detour off the trail to see the Cemetery and views of the Golden Gate Bridge behind it. Veterans are buried and remembered here.

Fort Winfield Scott

For more than 40 years Fort Winfield Scott was assigned as the headquarters for the artillery to defend the Bay Area. The Fort was completed in 1915 and contained all the essentials: infirmary, barracks, parade ground, workshops, storehouses, and recreation areas.

Golden Grate Bridge

This section of the trail ends at the Golden Gate Bridge, but the full Bay Area Ridge trail continues 510 miles (once completed) around the entire San Francisco Bay.

You can park in the golf course parking lot, the trailhead is near the entrance to the parking lot.

Most of this trail is GREAT (they are currently redirecting the last section to join the coastal trail rather than go through the streets of the old forts). Most of the hike is through the trees with some really great views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
