Overview: This Guide starts where the pavement ends on the Warren Wagon Road from McCall, Idaho. Here, at the "Y", the graveled Warren Wagon Road continues all the way to Warren, Idaho. The graveled road to the north, goes to Burgdorf, Idaho and on to the Salmon River.

There is parking space for several trailer rigs on the south side of the "Y".

It is 16 miles to Warren from here. The road is good all the way to Warren with only a few blind switchback curves.

FR 359 is suitable for high clearance vehicles, but 4X4 is better.

All the meadows are prime viewing areas for wildlife with dawn and dusk being the best viewing times.

The photos in this guide were taken in late September after the hard freezes at night. The meadows are green in July and August.

This whole area has been burned by lightning caused forest fires several times over the last 20 years.

Bear Lake has Brook Trout.

Tips: Depending on the seasons' snowfall, the trails are usually clear by July and open through September, sometimes a little longer. It gets cold in October.

Clothing depends on the weather, but it usually freezes at night all summer. Thunder storms are possible at any time.

Take drinking water with you as none of the ground water in this area is safe to drink without filtering or boiling.

Wild animals, including moose, elk, deer, bear, wolves, cougars, river otters, pine marten, and others are in the area. Chinook salmon spawn in the creeks, peaking in August.

Be aware that wolves are very territorial and may attack any dogs with you. Moose cows with calves may attack anything. Don't push your luck with moose! This is also "Bear Country".

Read and abide by the information at the trail heads on how to interact with horses and pack stock you may encounter.

There is no cell phone service in the area.

Contact the McCall Ranger Station, Payette National Forest, Idaho, telephone #208 634-0400 for maps, fire info, and camp ground availability.

Burgdorf "Y"

There is parking space for several trailer rigs on the south side of the "Y".

You go east on the Warren Wagon Road (FR 21).

It is 16 miles to Warren from here. The road is good all the way to Warren with only a few blind switchback curves.
Landmark
map

Warren, Idaho

Warren is a "ghost" town even though 9 to 16 people winter here and the population swells to about 50 in the summer.

It is snowbound all the way from McCall, Idaho in the winter.

There are no services here. There is a restaurant, the Winter Inn, but it is only open on the weekends. There was a "Bed & Breakfast", but there is a "For Sale" sign on it.

There is parking at the USFS Guard Station on the east side of town. Sometimes there is a "Camp Host" and a small museum open here. There is a restroom open when the museum is open.
Junction
map

Junction FR 340 & FR 359

In good weather, the road from Burgdorf to this junction is OK for automobiles. FR 359 requires a high clearance vehicle. 4X4 is better, especially after Pony Meadows.

This is private land and their signs indicate "No Trespassing". The mine entrance can be seen from the road.

Pony Meadows

Elevation: 7295'

The road forks at this meadow. The road to the right (west) leads to Bear Lake. There was a bad spot in a wet area with downed trees in the road when we were here. A 4X4 is recommended from the fork.

The road straight ahead, turning to the east, is OK to the outfitter camp. After that it narrows.

This whole area has been recently burned and it would be a good idea to have a saw with you, especially if the wind is or has been blowing hard.

Junction Bear Lake & Steamboat Ridge Trails

Elevation: 7572'

Both these trails are for foot/horse.

They are signed and it is about a mile over a very rocky trail to Bear Lake.

It is a little over a mile to Steamboat Ridge. The last time I was on the Steamboat Ridge Trail, about 20 years ago, the trail kind of disappeared in a clearing towards the top of the ridge. Just keep on uphill and you will hit the Steamboat Ridge Trail.

Bear Lake

Elevation: 7724'

Bear Lake is a popular name for lakes in the western U.S. I know of three within a 50 mile radius of here.

This one is pretty isolated and appears to be deep. It has brook trout and doesn't get a lot of fishing pressure. Just guessing, but the lake is probably around 40 acres in size.

The view has changed a lot since my first visit here, Several forest fires have burned the whole area recently.

Outfitter's Camp

This outfitter camp will be used in September through November, depending on the snowfall.

I would not recommend towing your travel trailer to this area, unless you really don't like it.

Great view of FR 340 winding down to the South Fork of the Salmon River and the river drainage.

Friends fished Bear Lake in July, 2012 and reported the lake is full of stunted brook trout. This is a fairly common occurrence with lakes with brookies.

They also advised the road uphill to Keystone Meadows was rough and somewhat washed out. They said it is a better ATV road than a full sized vehicle road.

A beautiful mountain area to explore, and lots to explore. Camp here for a week or two and you still won't see all the trails.
Another fine job....
