Overview:
This approach from Crane Pond is less steep then the eastern side one from Pharaoh Lake. From the top you will have great views in every direction over the vast Pharaoh Lake wilderness. This is a great hike for every season.
Tips:
Directions to Crane Pond Trailhead:
Take exit 28 off of I-87 and continue south on Route 9 to Alder Meadow Road. Turn onto this road and continue straight for 6.5 miles (don't go up the hill at the split). If you don't have 4x4 you can park around the y-split and walk the 2 miles of rough road, or you can drive it (check out photo in POI #2). If you have 4x4 follow the road to Crane Pond and park before the register.
Depending on how wet it has been and the water level you may have to start around this area and follow the road just a little further to get to the actual trail register to sign in for the hike.
At 2,556 feet you are at the summit of Pharaoh Mountain and should have wonderful 360 degree views over the Pharaoh Mountain Wilderness. Relax at the top and take some photos.
