Duration: 1-3 hours

Overview: More of a wander than an actual hike, meandering over the southern bluffs and coves at Pescadero State Beach.

Raw and rough during the winter, the sands build up during the calmer summer months.

If one's in a rush, an hour. If one wants to poke around, 2 hours tops. A good stop to stretch on a road trip or combine with another hike.

Tips: Easy HWY access.

Plenty of restrooms for a stop on a road trip.

Start

Pescadero has three primary coast access points. This one starts at the central point immediately south of the HWY 1 bridge over the marsh mouth. This walk is more of a wander than a regular point to point trek.

We focused our efforts here to exploring the southern bluffs and coves. The bluffs are alternately grass and iceplant covering highly eroded sandstone bluffs. Additionally much of the vegitation continues to be the native coastal scrub.

In a number of locations picnic benches have been set up in spots with spectacular ocean views making this an ideal for whale watching in the winter and spring! In several spots are paths and stairs leading down to the beaches.

Beach

We were down shortly after a storm which had washed out much of the sand, leaving behind a cobble beach for most of its length.

The powerful backflow of the receding waves caused hundred of these cobbles to roll, creating an amazing rumble.
