Overview: This guide takes you on a backpacking trip from the Palomarin Trailhead to Limantour Beach. The trip can be done in two or three days depending on how slow you want to take it. Nearly the whole trip follows closely to the coast. Near the beginning their are a few lakes that are accessible from the trail. Alamere Falls is a very great place to stop along the way and does not require a very long hike off the main trail.

Tips: Permits are required for backpacking and camping in this area. They can be picked up in the Bear Valley Visitor Center

Parking

Park at the Palomarin Trailhead. It is a big parking lot down the dirt road where there will be plenty of parking.

Alamere Falls

Alamere Falls is a very nice waterfall that falls directly on to the beach. The trail off of the Coast Trail is very poorly maintained so it will probably be a little overgrown. Watch out for Poison Oak as there is some along the trail. After a short time on that trail you will reach a series of small but awesome waterfalls. If you go towards the right while facing the ocean along the cliff you will see a very steep area with lots of lose rocks you can climb down to the beach and see the lower fall. Be very careful when climbing down. This is one of two waterfalls in California that is considered a tide fall by how close it falls to the ocean.

Wildcat Campground

This is the best place in the area to camp for the night. It is very close to the beach. A permit is required to camp in the area.

Coast Camp

For a three day trip this is the best place to camp the second night. Similar to Wildcat Camp, Coast Camp requires a short walk to get to the beach and permits are required to camp here as well.
