Parking Lot

Near the start of the trailhead you will find a parking lot for day-use. On weekends it may get quite full, but be patient because the hike is short and people will return soon to open up a parking spot.

Start along the path leading towards the ocean. The walk is about 1/4 a mile to the main view points, and you will walk through a tunnel under Hwy 1.

Overlook

At the end of the short trail you will reach the overlook point. Turn back to face the trail and you will see 80-foot McWay Falls dropping onto the sandy beach below. This view is one of the most photographed in all of Big Sur, and for good reason.

In December and January, you can often see gray whales migrating south from this point, and they return in March and April to the north Pacific where they feed during summer.

I was here a few years ago on a short trip during spring break. We stopped off to see McWay falls which was just spectacular. If you think the pictures look great, just wait until you see the real thing (and it only takes less than 30 minutes).
