Ophir Pass 4x4 Road, Colorado

Overview: Ophir Pass is a convenient and scenic way to get from Silverton to Telluride. Seasonal wildflowers grow thick at higher elevations. Unlicensed vehicles are allowed on Ophir Pass Road east of the town of Ophir; however, you cannot ride through town. Watch for signs. High Point 11,789 ft., Best time to go Late June-Sept. Moderate. Applies to one section of narrow, rocky shelf road on the west side of Ophir Pass. Everything else is easy. Passing an oncoming vehicle along the narrow shelf road west of Ophir Pass can be a little scary for a novice driver.

Tips: Wait for traffic to clear before starting across narrow section on west side of pass. Snowplows usually clear the road in June, otherwise the snow could be 20 feet deep at the pass. This trail can be driven in either direction. Our description starts on the Silverton side. Many people combine this route with Imogene Pass Trail to form a loop. Please go slow passing through town of Ophir.
