Overview: Ophir Pass is a convenient and scenic way to get from Silverton to Telluride. Seasonal wildflowers grow thick at higher elevations. Unlicensed vehicles are allowed on Ophir Pass Road east of the town of Ophir; however, you cannot ride through town. Watch for signs. High Point 11,789 ft., Best time to go Late June-Sept. Located in San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests. For current conditions call Norwood Ranger District (970) 327-4261.

Rating:

Moderate. Applies to one section of narrow, rocky shelf road on the west side of Ophir Pass. Everything else is easy. Passing an oncoming vehicle along the narrow shelf road west of Ophir Pass can be a little scary for a novice driver.

This trail is one of 100 trails from the book Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4WD Trails by FunTreks Publishing, available at http://www.funtreks.com

Tips: Wait for traffic to clear before starting across narrow section on west side of pass. Snowplows usually clear the road in June, otherwise the snow could be 20 feet deep at the pass. This trail can be driven in either direction. Our description starts on the Silverton side. Many people combine this route with Imogene Pass Trail to form a loop. Please go slow passing through town of Ophir.

Start at Highway 550

Look for County Road 8 about 5 miles north of Silverton on Highway 550. Wide gravel road heads west from near mile marker 75.

Ophir Pass

If you beat the snow plow to Ophir Pass, you won’t get through. Snow is sometimes 20 feet deep. Pass is usually plowed sometime in June.
map

Narrow Shelf Road

Before you proceed, look ahead and make sure no one is coming across the shelf road. A few spots are barely wide enough to pass and you won’t want to back up.
map

Town of Ophir

Pass through town quietly. Townsfolk don’t take kindly to your dust. Unlicensed vehicle riders can expect buckshot in their backsides if they try to ride through town.
map

Highway 145

Soon after the Post Office (don’t blink or you’ll miss it), you’ll reach paved Highway 145. Turn right for Telluride.

Took Ophir Pass in August of 2011, the quickest way from Ouray to Telluride and back (I think). Beautiful weather at the time and the pass is a pretty easy ride. The ride was good and the scenery was amazing. Not much traffic, the shelf road was the most exciting part of the pass. I would recommend it to anyone in the area.
