Overview: Lesser used area is entirely land locked by private property except where forest road enters between houses. Fun, challenging terrain. Great views from top of Miller Rock. Popular hiking area. Good for unlicensed vehicles except no place to park at start. Drive in 0.1 miles to small spot. Trail is open all year, weather permitting. You can exit through private Glacier View Ranch on 252A, but you must call ahead a few days to arrange to have them unlock gate. They are friendly to 4-wheelers and do this as a courtesy. Located in Roosevelt National Forest. For current conditions call Boulder Ranger District (303) 541-2500.

Rating:

Difficult. Steep, rocky climb to enter. Tight trees, but no difficult spots on 523. Choice of moderate or difficult route to Miller Rock. South of Point #3 is steep and very narrow with intimidating ledge near bottom.

This trail is from the book Guide to Northern Colorado Backroads & 4WD Trails, 3rd Edition, by FunTreks Publishing, available at http://www.funtreks.com

Tips: Start of trail is very odd. Turn right at mailbox #2025 . You actually go up someones driveway that splits 3 ways. Go down the middle to the right of small garage. Forest Road 252 is not marked until you drive in a short distance. Entrance is narrow with tight brush.

Start of Trail

To reach start of trail you must literally drive down someone's driveway, on right across from mailbox #2025. Stay to right of small garage and pass another house numbered 2027. Please pass through quietly. As trail enters forest, it is overgrown and tight with brush. There is a tiny spot to park after 1/10 mile. Trail soon begins to climb as it gets progressively rockier.

Shortcut to Miller Rock

Road on right is difficult shortcut to Miller Rock. Continue straight short distance to easier way to reach Miller Rock.
map

Three-way fork

Right at 3-way fork goes to Miller Rock. Left is easiest route that splits several times, but all ways eventually dead end. Straight is difficult road that drops steeply downhill to South Saint Vrain Creek and great camp spot.

Miller Rock

Small parking area at base of Miller Rock. Walk around back and climb to top for great views on a clear day. You can turn around here or continue 2 miles to locked gate at to private Glacier View Ranch. If you call 303-459-0771 several days in advance, they will unlock gate for you and allow you to cross their land. Nice folks, but you must give them some warning that you're coming.
map

South St. Vrain Creek

After some nasty downhill rock obstacles, you reach South St.Vrain Creek immediately after passing Hiking Trail #801. After crossing creek, left goes to a great campspot. Straight goes uphill to a network of trails, but it is so narrow here, that it is barely wide enough for an ATV.

Important Fork

Left here on 523 eventually ends at private property, but there are some nice camp spots this way. Right on 523C drops downhill and splits again, but everything deadends.
map

Old Saw Mill

You'll come to clearing a short distance before Forest Road 523D ends. Walk left about 100 feet to debris of old saw mill with rusty cook stove.
