Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 9.7 miles / 15.6 km
Duration: 1-3 hours
Dog Friendly

Overview: This is a great run offering a grinding uphill start followed by several miles of twisting and winding single track through the Little Frog Wilderness Area. The part I love the most is a 2 mile downhill run towards the end of the single track. You then get a nice downhill on Highway 64 and finish along the Ocoee River after passing through the Whitewater Center. The course has 2 creek crossings, some mud along a creek trail, but it is very quiet and secluded offering a perfect trail running experience.

Tips: You can park in the day use area of the Thunder Rock Campground. There is only one turn from the Benton-McKaye to RC 125 at the Little Frog sign. Carry water, as you always should, there are some sights to see along the creek. The start is all uphill, but the finish is all downhill and when it gets tough just remember the Ocoee River and a swim is waiting.

Points of Interest

Start

I park at the Ocoee 3 dam which is also the Thunder Rock Campground. Cross Highway 64 and you will see the T/H. There is a steep climb for the first .5 miles.

Ocoee River

The run ends at the river allowing a cooldown. When the upper is not running there are several pools deep enough to swim in.

Powerline

Near the top of the climb you cross the powerline.

Right turn

After about 1.8 miles you come to RC 125. Take the right and enjoy a downhill section to the creek crossing.

Flower

The run along the river is cool and enjoyable.

Creek crossing

Guaranteed water. Not more than 10-12' wide very low in summer.

Begin descent

At this point you begin a 2 mile downhill section. My favorite part of the run. Shaded, not too steep it is the payoff for the all the climbing.

End descent

The trail levels off heading for the second creek crossing.

Second creek crossing

This crossing is near the end of the run. You will hear cars on the highway. You may run into some hikers along this section.

Trailhead to 125

You will here the cars on Hwy 64 and know the end is near.

Out on the road

A .75 mile road section, all downhill, to the Whitewater Center.

Whitewater Center

The payoff, run through the center and cool off before the final mile.

One final trail

I cross over at the vehicle bridge, right turn onto the gravel trail and follow to Thunder Rock Campground
