www.hikewithvickster.webs.com - Ocean Scenic Trails At Trump Country Club is about 4.4 miles long (rail in map) and located near San Pedro Hill/Rancho Palos Verde, California. This place has it all. A beautiful golfcourse owned by Donald Trump, a picnic area with an amazing panaromic view of the ocean, must-do cliff side trails, a dog beach and some interesting television history. In 1996, MTV used surrounding areas of the penninsula to film the MTV Beach House. In addition, FOX filmed scenes from the hit show The O.C in the surrounding area and believe it or not, many of the Disney films - Pirates of the Carribean were photographed right on this coast. Why? Well, once you visit, you will quickly understand how much this area and its cliffs resemble those in Hawai'i. The trails here wind along the cliffs, some so close, those with fears of height should look away. Lined with coastal sage, cacti and many more native vegetation, you can't but help want to pack a mid day lunch and enjoy it beach-side. Right below the golf clubhouse is a tucked away beach - better known as the "dog beach". Frequented by locals and those from surrounding areas, you are sure to be in for lots of canine love. Give yourself ample time (1-3 hours) to explore the trails and tide pools along the beach.
Time your trip right - find out when low tide is and visit then. This is a great time to spot much sea life and local birds. If you plan your visit in mid January through April, bring binoculars. This is prime migrating season for whale watching.
Be sure to take some extra time to explore the tidepools. Better yet, time your trip for low tide and get an even better view of the local sea life. From starfish to dolphins and even whales during peak migrating season.
I extended this hike through Deane Dana Friendship Park - some nice views of San Pedro and the ports. Also, I recommend hiking down on the rocks along the shoreline in one direction, and on the easier paved trail the other direction. Visited on Aug 19, 2013
This was a STUNNING hike with beautiful views throughout the trip. It is relatively easy but includes some smaller trails that lead down to the rocky shores which can be more rigorous. The dog beach no longer exists, unfortunately, but you can still walk your dog along the main path. I did a full review of this hike on my blog, take a look for photos and details! : http://apartment402.tumblr.com/post/31056382476/oceantrails Visited on Sep 02, 2012
I love visiting this area, whether it be to hike the trails, visit the dog beach, take photos, explore the tidepools, or simply to just have lunch with an awesome view....I can never get enough of the Palos Verde Penninsla. Visited on Jan 03, 2012
