Overview: If you are taking your children to New York City for the day, you might want to pack in as much as possible. You can see everything in this guide if your family has a high energy level or you can spread this out over a couple of days. If you are taking your kids on the subway or bus, they ride free if they are shorter than 44 inches.

Tips: If your kids are little, bring a sturdy, easily collapsible stroller since you will be spending a lot of time on foot.

Good Enough to Eat

Fuel up at Good Enough to Eat, which has excellent baked goods, waffles, pancakes, French toast and eggs. Kids usually love the cow motif, and the picket fence that surrounds the sidewalk eating area.

If this is too crowded, head to Zabar's, 3 blocks away. You can sit in the corner cafe and eat a toasted bagel with cream cheese. And in the giant gourmet store, you can pick up food for lunch in Central Park.

Children’s Museum of Manhattan

Depending on your child's age, you should head next to the Children's Museum of Manhattan (ages birth to 8) or American Museum of Natural History (3 and older).

At the Children's Museum (CMOM), kids can "drive" a bus, take an adventure with Dora the Explorer and visit PlayWorks, just for kids birth to age 4. In summer, check out the water play exhibit outside.

You have to check your stroller here; have one parent wait in that line while the other pays admission.

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) has dinosaurs, animal dioramas and an updated planetarium. If your kids are ages 5-12, get a free timed ticket to the interactive Discovery Room, with puzzles and artifacts.

You can't see everything here in one day, so pick a couple of exhibits only.

CMOM has no eating facilities; AMNH has several.

Central Park

Central Park's attractions change with the seasons; an ice skating rink becomes an amusement park in summer and another rink becomes a free pool. When the weather is warm, you can rent a rowboat or a bicycle.

Almost any time of year, you can go to a playground. There are two right near the AMNH, 21 overall. Walk to the east side and downtown to the Central Park Zoo and the adjacent Children's Zoo.

Splurge on a carriage ride (horses line up on Central Park South near Fifth Avenue and 59th Street) or take a spin on the vintage carousel.

FAO Schwarz

If your kid is into Barbies, LEGOs or life-size stuffed animals, this is place. Design a 10-inch doll at the Madame Alexander Doll Factory or choose a baby from the nursery.

The toy soldiers who greet you don't just pose for photos. At 11am, 1 and 3pm, one reads stories. Demonstrators play the giant piano, do magic tricks and make walking through the doors an event.

The FAO Café is a treasury of New York food: PB&J from Peanut Butter & Co, pastries from Doughnut Plant, drinks from GuS Soda.

The glass cube in front of the store leads to an underground Apple Store.

Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center has the most famous Christmas tree in New York and you can ice skate in front of it during the holiday season. At Radio City Music Hall, next door, see the Rockettes in the annual Christmas spectacular.

You can also shop, take an NBC Studio tour, check out the latest games at Nintendo World and see the city from Top of the Rock. Even the ride to the outdoor observation deck, via glass-topped elevator, is fun (note there is a fee, see below).

Times Square

The neon signs and high energy attract families to Times Square. You can ride a giant Ferris wheel inside the flagship Toys R Us or stop by Discovery Times Square to see its latest exhibit.

At Madame Tussauds New York, you are guaranteed celebrity sightings, even if just of wax figures. Pose with N.Y. icons Babe Ruth or Marilyn Monroe or kid faves Miley Cyrus and Justin Beiber.
