Overview: These are two peaks (North 4,143'), (South 3,942') that can be climbed relatively easily on the first afternoon of entering Baxter State Park. I did these as a warm up climb for Katahdin the following day. The trail between the two peaks is very eroded and needs repair but the views of Katahdin from the top make up for it. Although South is technically shorter than 4,000 feet it is included in the Northeast 111ers because surveys at the time thought it was over.

Tips: Getting to Bachelor State Park:

Take I-95 to the Millinocket-Mattawamkeag exit which is roughly 50 miles north of Bangor. Follow signs to Millinocket and then turn right where the road splits at a high school onto Katahdin Ave. Go several blocks then take a left following signs for Baxter State Park which is about 16 miles away.

Black Flies - call the ranger station ahead of time to inquire about these nasties. On most days above treeline you should be fine as it is usually windy... I was just unlucky. Bring a head net and long sleeves if you are worried.

Fees:
There is a $12 fee to enter the park and the number of people allowed to climb at certain trailheads is limited on busy summer weekends so plan ahead.

North or South?

I chose to do North Brother first so headed climbers left before returning through this junction again to get South Brother. As you can see from the photo the trail can be a bit eroded here as well.

North Brother Summit

Great views of Katahdin from this bald summit.

South Brother Summit

More great views of Katahdin and back to North Brother's rocky summit. When you return back to the Mt. Coe trail from the summit you have the option to head left and make a loop hike out of it by heading south to Mt. Coe too. This would be a nice loop if you had time. Unfortunately I did not so this guide does not include that option in the gps track.
