Overview: You will cimb 3,400 feet in this climb up the Carter-Moriah northern trail section to the top of this 4,049 foot peak. You'll pass over Mt. Surprise, past a large glacial erratic on the trail and up plenty of slabs of granite which serve as the trail with painted stripes on them to guide you. At the summit there are great views of the Bond Range but when I was there it was a bit cloudy.

Tips: Bangor Road Trailhead:
This road leaves Rt. 2 just east of the Peabody River crossing just east of the official center of Gorham. Keep your eye out for the road as you leave the town.

There is a $3 fee to park here for the day.

Bangor Street Trailhed for Carter-Moriah Trial

This trailhead is sort of in a neighborhood. Just find an appropriate place to park. There is a parking fee of $3 per day here. Keep your eye out for moose on your way to and from the trailhead at dusk & dawn.

Mt. Surprise

Not much to see here but it does mark the official start of the Moriah ridge climb once you descend it. You'll know you are close when you start ascending large slabs of granite in the trail. If it is wet these may be slippery. You'll also pass by a very large glacial erratic boulder left over since the last ice age called Quimby's Pillow. It's pretty darn big!

Some nice views from here. Unfortunately for me it was cloudy the day I climbed.
