Overview:
Mt. Baker Ski Area rests on the west edge of Shuksan Arm and is the gateway to the eastern ridges of Mt. Baker and the Mt. Baker Wilderness area. The volume of snow here is often the deepest anywhere in the world. The snow conditions range from deep powder, compacted snow with a soft layer of new snow due to frequent snow fall, to great summer corn snow. Each of these backcountry tours have a variable degree of difficulty to pick the tour that matches your skill set, equipment and energy level. These are favorites for many of the local skiers and we return there time and time again because of the great runs and superb snow.
Tips:
Essential backcountry touring gear - avalanche beacons, probes, shovels, etc., are recommended for all routes. There are deaths from avalanche or cornice burials every few years by those not following these basic safety rules. Ski with a buddy, be prepared, travel where the snow is stable and don't stretch the boundaries of common sense.
