Mckenzie Pass Highpoint and Dee Wright Observatory Trails

From the parking area head out on the trail through the lava field towards the east for a great loop hike with wonderful views.

It doesn't matter which way you go here. It is a loop trail that will bring you back to this point. Enjoy the great views and make sure to read all the interpretive signs.

This is an amazing observatory in the pass with 360 degree views over the lava fields. The structure is made up of lava rocks and there is a compass at the top of it the identifies all the surrounding peaks. There are also interpretive signs about the first travelers over the pass and the hard times they encountered. You'll also learn a lot about the geology of the area. Make sure you make it inside to look through the holes towards the peaks as well.

Here is an interpretive sign area that describes the first travelers over the pass and the ordeals they went through. From this point you can head back the way you came or take the paved loop path through the lava field toward the western lot. From there just head back up the road to your car. You'll have great views of Belknap and Little Belknap Crater (where the lava came from) from this point.
