Overview: You are at the highest point in the pass at this Observatory. The structure, built completely of lava rocks, offers fantastic views to all the surrounding volcanoes. Following the loop trail through the lava field you will feel like you are in moon landscape. It's hard to believe that this much lava erupted from the earth around you! Make sure you take the time to read all the interesting interpretive signs on the trail.

Tips: From Sisters Drive West on the Mckenzie Pass Highway (Rte 242). You'll know it when you come to the area as there is a large parking area that is free.

Dee Wright Observatory

This is an amazing observatory in the pass with 360 degree views over the lava fields. The structure is made up of lava rocks and there is a compass at the top of it the identifies all the surrounding peaks. There are also interpretive signs about the first travelers over the pass and the hard times they encountered. You'll also learn a lot about the geology of the area. Make sure you make it inside to look through the holes towards the peaks as well.

Early Travelers

Here is an interpretive sign area that describes the first travelers over the pass and the ordeals they went through. From this point you can head back the way you came or take the paved loop path through the lava field toward the western lot. From there just head back up the road to your car. You'll have great views of Belknap and Little Belknap Crater (where the lava came from) from this point.
