Overview:
Located in the northwest corner of Sunol Regional Wilderness, Maquire Peak is one of the least visited area in this popular hiking ground. This easy 4.7 miles hike provides great solitude and nice views on San Antonio Reservoir for hikers. If you are lucky enough, you might be able to see the herd of Tule Elks wandering somewhere near the reservoir. To get to the trail head, drive 0.7 miles on Welch Creek Road from the junction with Calaveras Road until you see the gate with a small parking lot on your left side. The gate is marked SO12.

Tips:
1. Bring a lot of water.
2. Parking permit is required and can be purchased at the Sunol entry kiosk.

Enter the gate, follow Lower Maguire Peaks Trail for 0.8 miles until you meet the next junction pole, SO11. Watch out for poison oaks in the season.

At SO11, turn left and start hiking clockwise on Maghire Peaks Loop for 1.2 miles until you arrive at the bench.

BENCH

At the bench, there is a small trail lead to one of the summit of Maquire Peaks. You also have a great view of San Antonio Reservoir. If you are lucky enough, you might see the Tule Elk herd wandering in the area near the reservoir. Continue hiking clockwise on Maguire Peaks Loop for 1 mile until you meet the junction pole, SO9.

SO9

At SO9, continue hiking clockwise on Maguire Peaks Loop for 0.28 miles until you meet the next junction pole, SO8.

At SO8, continue hiking clockwise on Maguire Peaks Loop for 0.64 miles until you go back to the junction pole, SO11. At SO11, take the same way on Lower Maguire Peaks Trail back to the trail head to conclude the trip.
