Overview:
This is a truly amazing ski ascent and descent on a beautiful peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park. This park isn't very popular compared to the others and you may find yourself in early spring, like we did, the only people on the mountain! It's a great warm up for Shasta to the north. From the parking lot at the trailhead head into the woods and then up the Northeast Face of the mountain. Head up the Northeast Ridge as soon as it looks safe to do so and then traverse the ridge towards the summit. You'll round the backside of the summit and have to do a bit of a scramble up the summit rocks to reach the top. Once on top head down to climbers left to a col to put on your skis for the epic descent down the Northeast Face. As always make sure snow conditions are safe!
Tips:
It costs $20 to enter the National Park. We started our ascent from the "Devastated Area" Parking lot.
Directions:
From Redding head east on Highway 44 about 45 miles to the park. Then take 89 through the park to the trailhead.
The Northeast Face is shaded form the sun so make sure the snow conditions are safe before attempting this trip.
Have fun and enjoy this as it is one of the best I have done in the Northwest. You'll be able to ski at a pretty good pace all the way back down to your vehicle. Only took us about 30 minutes!
