Overview:
The Kuli`ou`ou Ridge Trail is a 2.25 mile trail that rises almost 1800 feet, before peaking on the spine of the Ko`olau Ridge. It’s a great hike and a tough run, for it is steep, but it is very run-able and offers a great reward in the form of spectacular views. The locals say that you’re suppose to run to the top, come back down to the picnic table, and then run back to the top again.
Tips:Where to start: Kalaau Pl, Honolulu, Hawaii 96821S Where to park: Same. The very end of the street is marked no parking, and that seems to be enforced. Get there early, or your parking options won’t be close to the trail head.
Facilities Water? Nope. Toilets? Nope. Medical care? Nope. Ranger / park folks? Nope. Picnic areas? One. Mid way up, about 1.5 miles from the trail head and .7 miles from the top.
This is in reply to the post by Manawaiakea. I know exactly what happened to make that person's hike so terrible. Right toward the beginning of the trail there is a sign pointing straight for the Kuli'ou'ou Valley Trail and right for the Kuli'ou'ou Ridge Trail. The valley trail is pretty terrible, just as Manawaiakea described it. The ridge trail (turn right at the sign) is the one that this post refers to and it is not muddy, slippery, full of bugs, etc. at all. It is a pretty easy hike and ends with a pretty good view. This is a good trail for someone who is not an avid hiker but wants to see some of O'ahu's beauty. If you are an avid hiker you're not going to get much of a thrill or even much of a work out from this trail, though. Visited on Aug 18, 2012
VERY easy to get lost. spent an hour going up 2 different trails, both of them climbing over and dodging fallen trees, and both of them leading to a dead end. bugs EVERYWHERE, ended up with bites covering my legs and even on my face. slippery and unstable when wet (which is always.) campers up in the mountains. donʻt bring your dogs, its hunting grounds and they will get shot and killed. dried out river with blue pools filled with bug larva, can be seen from 100 feet away. nothing i saw looked like these pictures.
