Overview: This is Day 6 along the Janapar Trail. This section takes you from the historic and aptly named village of Karintak ("under the rock"), down the Karkar River. You'll see the stunning Zontik ("umbrella") waterfall, the ruins of Hunot Village, an old stone bridge, a cave, and stunning views of the Karkar Canyon from above.

You'll end up in the historic fortified city of Shushi. The city is still half in ruins from the Karabakh war. The beautiful cathedral, churches, mosques, museum and city walls are all worth exploring.

Tips: * Bring a bathing suit if it's hot, you may want to jump into the Karkar river!

* Just follow the blue signs as you follow this well marked trail. Print out the Janapar Guidebook from janapar.org in addition. Your GPS will likely not work at the bottom of the canyon, since satellite reception will probably be poor.

Zontik Waterfall

A surreal mossy waterfall known as Zontik (umbrella) will stun you with its beauty. There's a picturesque wooden bridge which will test your balance under slippery conditions, and a refreshing pool below.

All of this is located along the Karkar River, deep under the cliffs of the Karkar Canyon.

Ruins of Hunot Village

The village of Hunot was so deep in the Karkar Canyon that a road could never be built to it. The residents abandoned the village in Soviet times, preferring to live in more connected places, but ruins of the old stone structures still exist, and you'll be thankful for the solid old stone bridge you'll cross to get over the Karkar River.

Cave

This cave has a nice view of the sheer cliffs of the Karkar Canyon, but unfortunately the cows enjoy the cliffs often enough that the earthy smell will keep you from resting there - unless perhaps it rains.

View of the Karkar Canyon

The sheer vertical cliffs of the Karkar Canyon are skirted with lush forest. The view from above is quite impressive, and keeps changing as you hike. You'll appreciate how much you've climbed in elevation when you get to the top.

Field of Wildflowers

A great variety of wildflowers and insects can be found in this field in the Springtime.
