The world famous posto nove (post 9).
It is in the immediate neighborhood of post 9 that Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes wrote the famous ‘Garota de Ipanema’ (Girl from Ipanema) inspired by a young beauty who was going to the beach in front of post 9 each day.
Nowadays, post 9 is the meeting point of Rio’s "mauricinhos and patricinhas" (the rich, bronzed and beautiful cariocas; girl and boys, see pictures). You won't miss this point as it is the most crowded part of Ipanema beach, and you will heard people applauding when the sun reappears after being masked by a cloud for a while: the essence of the carioca spirit.
Post 9's history started in the eighties when a famous bisexual political opponent, who fought against the dictatorship controlling the Brazil at that time, came back from his political exile in France and went to the beach at that spot regularly so that the post 9 progressively became famous throughout Brazil as an alternative space, symbol of freedom and political resistance. Post 9 has a history of pot smoking (illegal in Brazil) and police raids.
Do not miss watching the sunset from Post 9.
If you do not want to go on walking along Ipanema's beach, then directly cross Ipanema to reach the lagoa, walk a bit along the lagoon to reach the pedalo stop 15.
