Overview: Rio de Janeiro: the cidade maravilhosa (marvelous city) is of alluring beauty. With the contrast between the verdant rainforests, the deep blue ocean and the white-sand beaches shining under the sun, Rio de Janeiro is one of the world's most spectacular city. What about Rio’s residents? They are known as cariocas, who are friendly, sexy, relax, enthusiastic,...

In Rio, you can enjoy scenic breathtaking outlooks from the Corcovado and Pão de Açúcar, relax on the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca, dances the night away in the sounds of Samba or forro in the heart of Rio's nightlife in Lapa, surf great waves in Prainha and Grumari, hike through Tijuca’s forest and so on... A paradise, don't you think so?

The Zona Sul is Rio’s upscale neighborhoods, and the area of the most famous beaches, including Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. The Zona Sul is overlooked by the world famous Christo Redentor.

The beach and neighborhood Ipanema gained fame from the bossa nova sound "Girl from Ipanema" written in 1962 by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes. The word "Ipanema" comes from the old Tupi language and means "bad water", probably bad for fishing, since the waves, dying too close to the sand, push fish away.

Ipanema is a kind of peninsula, a tiny band of buildings surrounded by the ocean and the lagoon Lagoa.

Tips: Do not forget the sunscreen, the sunglasses and a cap.
You may rent chairs and umbrella on the beach.

For a drink or fast food on the way:

1. The kiosks along the beach (delicious coconut juice).
2. Gula Gula are very popular restaurants in Rio (Av. Gen. San Martin 1196 in Leblon, Avenida Alexandre Ferreira 220 Loja A in Jardim Botanico, Rua Henrique Dumont 57 in Ipanema).
3. Snack bar or sucos where you should taste: Aipim Frito (Deep fried slices of cassava), Bolinhos de bacalhau (Deep-fried codfish balls), Carne seca com aipim frito (dried jerked meat with deep-fried cassava slices), the famous Pão de queijo (A cheese bread, baked into bite-sized biscuits), Pastel de camarão (Crispy deep-fried pastry filled with shrimp): Bibi sucos, Ataulfo de Paiva 591-A, in Leblon.

Walk way: famous cobblestones design.

All the beaches of Rio have their own cobblestones design named "calçadao" on the walking way along the beach (see picture).

From 5 am, hundreds of cariocas practice sports along these "calçadao" and in the mini-open-air fitness located along the beach.

It is a delight to jog along the beach in the sunrise or sunset.

The world famous posto nove (post 9).

It is in the immediate neighborhood of post 9 that Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes wrote the famous ‘Garota de Ipanema’ (Girl from Ipanema) inspired by a young beauty who was going to the beach in front of post 9 each day.

Nowadays, post 9 is the meeting point of Rio’s "mauricinhos and patricinhas" (the rich, bronzed and beautiful cariocas; girl and boys, see pictures). You won't miss this point as it is the most crowded part of Ipanema beach, and you will heard people applauding when the sun reappears after being masked by a cloud for a while: the essence of the carioca spirit.

Post 9's history started in the eighties when a famous bisexual political opponent, who fought against the dictatorship controlling the Brazil at that time, came back from his political exile in France and went to the beach at that spot regularly so that the post 9 progressively became famous throughout Brazil as an alternative space, symbol of freedom and political resistance. Post 9 has a history of pot smoking (illegal in Brazil) and police raids.

Do not miss watching the sunset from Post 9.

If you do not want to go on walking along Ipanema's beach, then directly cross Ipanema to reach the lagoa, walk a bit along the lagoon to reach the pedalo stop 15.
