A great easy to moderate hike if you are visiting or new in town with great views of the Hollywood sign. The total hike is a little over 4 miles and will take about 1-2 hours depending on your hiking speed, resting or taking in the beautiful views. At the top is a great 360 degree view behind the famous sign.
To get to the hike, drive up Beachwood Drive all the way until it ends and you'll see a dirt parking area at the bottom of the hike with a path leading up. You'll follow it up to the left.
Make sure to follow posted signs to not end up at the Sunset Ranch - unless you want to take a guided horseback ride ;). Also note when you reach the old paved road you can go down to the left and around to get a close view of the front of the sign (you'll see a locked gate at the end). Then backtrack to then go up (earlier to the right) to follow the road up to the top to get a view from behind the sign.
At the top you'll find yourself behind a gate with the sign just feet in front of you, around to the left off the road is a small dirt trail to the very top where you'll get the full 360 degree view.
Shorts and short sleeves are fine as the trail is fairly open and free of plants and shrubs. Even though I've seen people do this hike in flip flops I suggest athletic or hiking shoes as it's a dirt trail and can be a bit steep in some areas. There's not a lot of shade so sunglasses and/or a hat are nice.
