Overview:
Enjoy scenic views over the Grandes Jorasses, the Mont Blanc, the Vélan and the Grand Combin. If you have just one chance to hike in the Grand Saint Bernard area this destination would be one of the best. All along the way you will cross very different landscapes, flowers and high mountains animals that are not that easy to observe usually. The Grand Saint Bernard (2472m) offers good italian restaurant with typical mountain food, a monastery founded in 1000 A.C. approximately and a museum where the Saint Bernard dogs can be seen. Saint Bernard dogs have been world famous rescuer of travelers and alpinists from more than 300 years now. There are buses to come back to Ferret from the Grand Saint Bernard (2h).
Tips:
What to bring: at least 1,5L / adult. Some food. When to go: June-october. Colors are great in september and october but temperature are much lower usually. With small children you may just do the the round trip to the lakes of Ferret or also hike directly from the Fenêtre supérieure de Ferret to the Grand Saint Bernard (45minutes descent).
In the summertime, Plan-la-Chaux is a high mountain pasture for the Hérens cows. Those huge black cows are famous for their fights that determine a "queen" of the herd.
The lane down the pointe de Drône maybe too difficult for unexperimented hikers. Another, shorter and easier lane get directly from the Fenêtre supérieure de Ferret to the Grand Saint Bernard (1h).
