Overview: Go panning for gold!

This hike explores the Goodwin Gold Mine back in the 1800's which was one of many in the area! There are also Sawmill ruins and other things to explore here.

The trail starts out on the flat Mill pond trail and takes us to a feeder of the large lake in the area, at this location was the site of Haileys mill (which was destroyed in a dam burst).

The 2nd leg takes us through pigeon run trail along a road and into a very very quiet forest with a stream crossing.

The 3rd leg brings us to the Gold mine trail, going back up along the road for a long ways until we finally reach the gold mine in the forest. The gold mine ruins, trenches and multiple depressions are very pronounced in the area. This part of the hike presents the most abundant birds in the area, possible predatory varieties.

The last leg takes us back through pine and other varieties of forests, relatively flat areas. Before reaching the parking lot, you will find a sawmill site with a pronounced water well and history sign.

It is possible to go gold panning and other events through the visitor center.

There are not many places to sit on the trail, it is suggested you snack and have lunch by the boat launch area, right on the lake as plenty of tables are there.

Tips:

  • have lunch in the boat ramp area! not many places to sit on the trail
  • bring tons of water depending on the heat! this is a long trail.
  • sign up for gold panning at the visitors center
  • alot of this trail, save for the road, is well suited for trail running

animal remains

animal remains here...

can hear large groups of birds here, possibly more...predatory birds... seen plenty of crows and possibly some kind of vulture (larger birds).

on further research it appears to be a horse skull of a younger horse... the teeth are premolars and molars not canine or rodent (incisors), the orbits are protuded slightly and have holes above them which are consistent with a horse skull.

possibly the larger predatory birds carried it here as it is only the upper portion, however given that there are a large group of predatory birds in the area it is possible that there may be further remains.

it is also possible since there is an equestrian area that someone brought a horse to be put down here and did it in the woods... i really have no insight into this, i hope someone checks this out further as it may be a crime to do so here.

(ok sorry i have no study in anthropology or animal biology)
