Giant Mountain and Rocky Peak Ridge

This is one of my favorite shuttled-car loop hikes in the High Peaks with a beautiful ridge descent with open views.

Overview: This 11 mile shuttled-car hike is one of my favorite of all the Adirondack 46. You'll bag two more 4,000 foot peaks and descend over many smaller ones as you travel east down Rocky Peak Ridge. The ascent up Giant Mountain is amazing with great views the entire way up. You'll pass by several ponds on this trip for filtering water as well. Check out the photos from this amazing climb.

Tips: The Chapel Pond Trailhead is across from Chapel Pond several miles north on 73 from the intersection of 73 and Route 9. There is no fee to park there. The eastern trailhead off of Rte 9 several miles north from the intersection as well with no fees there either. You can reach Rte. 73 off exit 30 off I-87. You will want to drop a car at the Rte 9 lower trailhead and then drive to the Rte 73 Chapel Pond Trailhead to start the hike.

Chapel Pond Trailhead
Head up the Ridge Trail. You'll soon find yourself at the beautiful Giant Washbowl Pond. Parking here is free.

A big pond that sits at the base of massive Giant Mountain.

Ridge Climb up Giant
From this point on you will be scrambling up a trail of open ledges and amazing viewpoints. One of the best ascents in all the High Peaks in my opinion.

East Trail intersection
Continue on from here to the top of Giant Mountain straight ahead. You will be returning here and heading on down the East Trail towards Rocky Peak for your long descent out to the easterly trailhead.

Summit of Giant Mountain
At 4,626' you are on top of one big mountain. You are standing yards away from the massive slides on the mountains westerly face that make it so distinctive from the road below. Take some time to relax here and then make your way back to the intersection to start heading down the East Trail.

Summit of Rocky Peak Ridge
You are 4,383 feet and will soon have a really beautiful descent down the long ridge over several smaller peaks with open views on ledges the entire way. This descent is really what makes the effort to carpool two cars worth it.

Marie Louise Pond
A cool alpine pond as you start to descend down Rocky Peak Ridge.

Bald Peak
This smaller 2,313' peak is one of the smaller ones you will descend over with great views from its rocky ledges.

Blueberry Cobbles
Another small peak on the way out. There is another peak nearby named Mason Mountain. These are around 2,300 feet in height and the last ones you will cross over on the way out.

Mason Mountain
The last mountain with a name you will skirt on the way down the East Trail. Just another mile or two and you'll be out to the Rte 9 and the vehicle.

East Trail Trailhead
This is just a couple miles north up the Bouquet River on Rte. 9 from it's intesection with Route 73. Look for it on the left side of the road and drop a car off here.
