Overview: This is guide is specifically meant for a short day tour of Fraser Island. The island could easily be explored for several days but this guide will hit some of the major sights to see on the island. From Hervey Bay you will take a ferry over to Fraser Island unloading near POI #1 (there are several ferry docking sites near POI #1). You can take a guided tour or rent a burly 4x4 vehicle and head off on your own. When I was here I was in a 4x4 bus and did not have a gps with me so the track across the island to the east side in this guide is my best guess at the route we took. If you are on your own I highly suggest you obtain a detailed map of the island roads as they are all sand and getting stuck and lost would not be fun. When you get to the east side you will be traveling up and down the 75 mile beach to see an old ship wreck, take a stroll through a warm sandy creek and then travel south to explore a freshwater lake that is slowly getting swallowed by a sand dune. You'll then return through the Yidney Rainforest again to the ferry and head back to Hervey Bay.

Tips: Take Highway A1 north from Sidney or South From Cairns towards Hervey Bay, When you get to Hervey Bay head towards the Urangan Boat Harbor and look for signs for Ferrys to Fraser Island. This is a very tourist centric environment so you'll easily be able to follow signs and find businesses that will take you on Fraser Island Tours.

Ferry Landing

Here is where the ferry from Hervey Bay will drop you off in your 4x4 vehicle. If you don't have access to a 4x4 vehicle check the links in this guide to find out how you can rent one or take a 4x4 guided tour of the island. From here you will be taking very sandy roads across the island. If you are in a tour bus I would suggest not taking the back seat as any big bump will send you flying into the air. Try not to get stuck in the sand! You will be passing through the beautiful Yidney Rainforest on your way to the eastern side of the island. You will definitely want to get a map of the island if you are on your own as the route I have drawn across the island is the best guess I can make as to the route we took on our guided tour.

Happy Valley

This is one of the small towns on the island. Here you can grab some food, stay overnight or even rent an apartment for a while if you'd like. If you'd like to stay in this area check out the link to the Backpackers Hostel from TripAdvisor in the guide links section. After getting some lunch enjoy the beach . You are now about to start your day exploring what is called the 75 mile beach. This beach serves as the main highway on the east side of the highway and even the airport for the island. You will see plenty of cars zooming up and down the sandy beach. Be careful about swimming though as when I was there I was told there are a lot of sharks just off the beach and it can be dangerous.... although they may have been pulling my string. Don't worry, there will be plenty of other places to swim in this guide.

Eli Creek

This is a spectacular place to bring the family if you are vacationing on the east side of Frasier Island. Eli Creek has wooden boardwalks that follow the twisting stream and with the sandy bottom you can easily swim or walk up the shallow stream following it as it twists around corners through the woods. It is the largest freshwater stream on the east side of Fraser Island and during the spring and summer there is pretty warm to swim in.

Maheno Shipwreck

A very cool shipwreck from 1935. Feel free to explore the rusted out wreckage.

Lake Wabby

This is a very cool natural spring-fed lake that is slowly being swallowed by a massive sand dune. From the 75 Mile Beach you'll see a sign for a trail that leads to the lake. Under the trees over the lake you may find catfish and turtles if you do a little hunting. There are trails that go through the woods to the lake and you also have the option of walking across the and dune but trust me, if it is a hot day and you are in sandals you may not want to do that...
