Overview: A cycle road along a private road. This is rarely open to the public but is worth it for the tunnel alone. The road was originally a mineral railway line and is now used by the clay lorries.

Tips: Do not attempt to sneak onto the road, the tunnel is only a lorry wide and they travel at high speed. Keep in touch with the Fowey RNLI to see when the road will next be open for a fundraiser.

The Beginning

The road starts by Caffa Mill carpark and is rarely open to any but clay lorries.

Pinnock tunnel entrance

There were a few bends in the tunnel but my GPS couldn't track them. Pinnock Tunnel was originally one of the mineral tram lines, it has since been turned into the clay road between Fowey and Par Docks, the two chief docks for the UK China Clay industry.
Landmark

The fabulous long wet, eerie clay tunnel!

This was a marvellous cycle ride, the tunnel was echoey and dripped all the time which was much needed on such a hot day. The tunnel was lit throughout so we had no need for torches or lights.

Par Docks - seem from the beach.

Par Docks took over from Charlestown as the major Clay dock and for decades has sent ships all over the world. The industry is declining now and soon the docks are to be closed and redeveloped.

and the end - pretty white from the clay tunnel

An exploration of a closed part of Britain, well worth it. It is only opened for charity events maybe once or twice a year.

Tunnel exit

The wonder of this route is that it's nearly flat the whole way and for anyone who has done the road or the coastpath between Fowey and Par then you'll know how hilly it is!
