Overview: New Orleans, rich in culture and history, is more than just a place to celebrate Mardi Gras. While Mardi Gras is a wonderful time to visit (and there are lots of family friendly activities during Mardi Gras despite what you may hear), be sure to also check out these great spots.

Tips: This walking guide can be completed in a half day or can be extended to a full day depending on how long you stay at each activity, namely the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and the Insectarium. Depending on the interest of your family, use this guide as a starting point. Add a walking tour or a ghost tour if you would like. Be sure to stay hydrated as the humidity can wear on everyone quickly. When you leave the Insectarium, head down Decatur St. for a late lunch/early dinner at one of the many family friendly restaurants.

Audubon Insectarium

The Insectarium is full of all things associated with creepy crawlies. The Underground Gallery will make you feel like you are the size of a bug as you explore what it would be like to live underground. There are all sorts of bugs of all sizes in the main hall of the Insectarium where you can learn more about the history of bugs. Watch the movie in the Terminex Immersion Theater where you will be treated to a multi-sensory experience. If you are daring enough, you can buy a snack made from bugs in the Tiny Termite Cage. Our favorite part of the Insectarium is the Butterflies in Flight exhibit where hundreds of butterflies fly around you in the peaceful garden.
