Overview: One of the first African-American-Owned airfields "Columbia Air Center" operated here during and after WW 2--and participating in the Civil Air Patrol--training other pilots.

What you'll see on this hike is history signs with photos and a memorial to these great pioneers in aviation history.

Starting at the memorial, head up the road, then get a bit dirty as you go to the offroad trail section. The offroad trail section can be made into a larger loop by combining other trails as necessary.

You will encounter multiple artifacts including a J-3 Cub partial airframe, mixer assembly, and other assorted things that have absolutely no value and cannot be taken away easily. All artifacts here are protected by the state and are illegal to remove. that being said, they have no value and have lots of rust on them. The single airframe has been picked clean by their owners long ago (as the legend tells us online).

After the artifacts trail, you venture around the airfield towards Patuxent river.

At Patuxent river you can have a packed lunch at the Gazebo, or continue on the easy to walk on road.

The road takes us to the camping area and then back to the parking lot.

These true pioneers in aviation history leave a plethora of memories celebrated in this section of Patuxent River Park--and their dedication and love of aviation can clearly be seen in the memorial photos and history presentation.

Tips:

  • pack a lunch to eat at the Gazebo by the Patuxent river on the far side of the airfield
  • combine other trails to form larger loop hikes
  • explore other areas of the park
  • do not take any artifacts, it is illegal and they arent worth anything!!
  • hiking pole could be used for muddy offroad artifacts section of trail

Points of Interest

Parking

parking area

good parking lot, there is another by the boat ramp.

this hike starts along the road, although you can make this loop bigger by combining other trails.

This loop goes around the former Columbia Air Center airfield also, and makes for a nice leisurely stroll (while around the field area).

The artifacts part of the hike can get muddy and slippery.

memorial and history

this is the memorial at the airfield, and has some information boards.

This is one of the first African American Airfields who contributed to the Civil Air Patrol during and after WW 2.

Having approx 4 planes, the airfield ran a pilots school also.

Just looking at the pictures, you can see some very dedicated young men who loved to fly.

old airframe J-3 Cub plane

this is an old airframe of a J-3 Piper Cub.

The legend goes it landed short of the runway and was unrecoverable, so all parts were stripped from it except for the frame and some misc parts. There were no injuries thus known. (report retrieved from online search and may not be factual)

All that remains are a partial frame and some other rusted metal parts. (no engine, controls or anything else of value)

There are no parts to salvage, or take as souvenirs.

This is a state protected area, and it is illegal to damage or remove anything here. (no artists thanks)

A picture of a J-3 Cub is uploaded too for comparison purposes.
