Overview:
This very LONG overnight will bag you two 14er peaks. You will gradually ascent Conundrum Creek Valley watching as the trees get smaller and the miles tick by. Your campsite will be around Conundrum Hot Springs where you can take a soak and relax your feet after the long approach. In the morning you will head to the opposite side of the valley and follow the track in this guide to ascend both peaks. You will climb a very steep and loose scree slope up to the ridge where you will have access to both peaks. You then will return via the same way with the option of heading back up to the springs or simply returning to the trail down the canyon to shave a mile or so off.
Tips:
OConundrum Creek Trailhead:
Leave Aspen on westbound Highway 82. At a roundabout, take Maroon Lake Road west a very short distance then turn south on Castle Creek Road. Follow this road about 5 miles until you come to Conundrum Creek Road. Take a right onto this crossing Castle Creek over a bridge and continue to the trailhead.
This is the traverse back to head up into the peaks. These pictures show the ascent and descent from this area. Next you'll be moving into snow fields and scree fields.
Here you may have to cross some snow fields and then you'll be headed up the really steep scree face in front of you to gain the ridge. No other way around it. Watch your ankles!
Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the top here as my camera died. Hopefully some other website members will have some soon. Return the way you came being careful on the descent.
