Overview: A lengthy hike on a variety of terrain in a lesser-known trail in Pescadero Creek County Park. Park at the small lot on Wurr Road and enjoy the hike on Old Haul Road, then up and along Butano Ridge, then down again. It's a significant climb up to the ridge, but well-worth it for physically fit hikers. (Sorry, no bicycles allowed)

Tips: Bring water and comfortable shoes and be sure to tell someone where you're going and when to panic if you're late. Natural dangers include ticks, snakes and mountain lions, which will usually leave you alone if you stay on the trail and don't hike at dusk or dawn.

Right turn off Old Haul Road to start your long uphill trek

Optional sidetrip to the right for an ocean view

Congratulations at achieving most of your vertical climb! Now you can either turn left to continue your loop, or make an optional right sidetrip for ocean views on a clear day. There some "annoying" 50 and 100 foot dips on this portion of the trail that don't easily show on the topographic maps. On a clear day, ocean views are possible.

Sidetrip turnaround!

You may turn around from your sidetrip here, or you may still go further, as the park boundary is still quite away further down the old road. This spot is the approximate high point, however. Along this section you can catch glimpses of the ocean on a clear day.

Leave Butano Fire Road

Look for the left turn onto the narrow trail, just before you reach the "private property" gate on the Butano Fire Road. Begin your downhill from here, back to the Old Haul Road that brought you into the park.

Rejoin the Old Haul Road

Hang a left at the bottom of your big downhill, and follow the Old Haul Road back to your car. Whew! You'll sleep well tonight...
