Overview: Burgdorf is also the name applied to the area surrounding it in the mountains north of McCall, Idaho. It is a rustic, late 1870s resort centering on a developed hot springs.

It is a very scenic area with a lot of meadows, creeks, lakes, and high mountainous terrain.

Elevations in the area range from about 6000' to about 8500'.

In the summer, activities range from hiking, camping, fishing, horse backing, mountain biking, dirt biking, ATVing, sight seeing, ect.

Fall and winter activities include the above and also hunting and snowmobiling. Access from McCall to Burgdorf in the winter is strictly by some type of snow capable machine. The area is usually snowbound until the middle of June.

Except for the main roads, Warren Wagon Road & Burgdorf Road, most of the roads are only suitable for high clearance vehicles, preferably 4X4s. It is ATV and dirt bike country. It is also popular with mountain bike riders able to handle the elevation changes of thousands of feet within a couple of miles distance.

Most of the land surrounding Burgdorf is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Payette National Forest. Some is managed the the Bureau of Land Management. There are also parcels of private land scattered through the area.

Tips: Depending on the seasons' snowfall, the trails are usually clear by July and open through September, sometimes a little longer. It gets cold in October.

Clothing depends on the weather, but it usually freezes at night all summer. Thunder storms are possible at any time.

Take drinking water with you as none of the ground water in this area is safe to drink without filtering or boiling.

Wild animals, including moose, elk, deer, bear, wolves, cougars, river otters, pine marten, and others are in the area. Chinook salmon spawn in the creeks, peaking in August.

Be aware that wolves are very territorial and may attack any dogs with you. Moose cows with calves may attack anything. Don't push your luck with moose! This is also "Bear Country".

Read and abide by the information at the trail heads on how to interact with horses and pack stock you may encounter.

There is no cell phone service in the area.

Contact the McCall Ranger Station, Payette National Forest, Idaho, telephone #208 634-0400 for maps, fire info, and camp ground availability.

Log cabins are available for rent at the hot springs and the springs are open to the public for day use also. Dogs are required to be kept on a leash.

The meadow across the road is a prime viewing area for wildlife.

Burgdorf, Idaho, was established at the hot springs in the late 1800s. The hot springs were developed and a hotel was built. The resort serviced the miners who were working the gold and silver mines on the Salmon and Secesh Rivers at the time.

The photographs of the old hotel show silver panels over the windows and portions of the structure. These are fire retardant blankets installed by fire fighters when the latest forest fire threatened Burgdorf several years ago. All the buildings in Burgdorf were similarly protected, but the blankets on most have been removed.

Wallis Mine

The trail from the main road is only wide enough for ATVs. The mine shaft is less than a 1/2 mile from the main road. Do not venture into mine shafts as old dynamite or chemicals could be stored within. Also cave-ins due to decayed timbers are possible.

Downhill and to the east are some old mine buildings. A spur trail from the trail to the mine shaft leads to easy walking distance to the buildings.

Humbolt Mine

There is a two story log cabin with an attached shed at this old mine.

This was apparently a hydraulic mine due to the eroded mountainside below the cabin and the ponds dammed below the area.

The cabin is about a 1.2 mile hike from the California Lake Road.

California Lake

This is a beautiful mountain lake that, with careful driving over a very rough road, can be reached by automobile. High clearance vehicles are recommended.

The rocky road/trail that continues northwest from here is signed for 4X4 vehicles but is very narrow and dangerous in places.

This is a great picnic spot.

We discovered the Humbolt Mine on this trip. I added it as a POI to this guide. It is about a mile hike off the California Road. The map shows a shorter route to the mine, but we didn't take it.
