Overview: Located four hours north east of San Francisco this Northern California park might be a little out of the way, but it’s a prime destination for seekers of tranquility and those with even just a passing interest in geology.

Sticking to the trail is always recommended, but if you're visiting Bumpass Hell we really must insist. To illustrate the point you have to look no further than the man who discovered these volcanic hotsprings, Kendal Bumpass, who managed to fall in and injure his leg not once but twice, the second time requiring his leg to be amputated!

Scare-stories aside, this really is an easy family friendly hike with little in the way of danger as long as you keep the little ones under control.

Elevation gain:
• 450ft (from 8,100 - 8,400ft)

Tips:
• Summer through fall is the best time to experience this trail. Snow covers the Lassen landscape for much of the year, closing roads and obscuring trails. See our links below to National Park Service information on road and trail closures.
• Combine this hike with the 5-mile trek to the summit of nearby Lassen Peak for a great day out.

Trailhead

Possibly the most popular hike in the park, the parking lot for Bumpass Hell fills up pretty rapidly.

If you're short of a parking spot you could probably grab one if you just hang out for a few minutes, or alternatively there are some more spaces on the East side of neighboring Lake Helen, and you can pick up the trail a little further along.

The beginning of the trail is well signed at the entrance to the parking lot, and proceeds in an Easterly direction on a nice level trail.

Lassen Peak Photo Opportunity

Here you'll find one of the classic views of Lassen Peak, reflected in the blue waters of Lake Helen.

The trailhead for the 5-mile Lassen Peak hike is only a short distance away, and makes a great companion hike if you have energy and time enough for two adventures in one day.

Overlook

There's much more to this short hike than just our destination. The trail winds around the sides of a valley over a 1000ft deep, and looks across to the peaks of both Brokeoff and Diller Mountains.

Bumpass Hell

After cresting a small hill, the trail descends appropriately into Bumpass Hell.

Walking down into this steaming cauldron of bubbling mud pots, smelly sulfuric vents and boiling pools of water looks decidedly other-worldlike.

A network of sturdy boardwalks and guardrails make this place a safe and great way of exploring this dramatic landscape.

Great views, worth it even with the hazard warning on the trail-head.

What is this place? Yellowstone? This was a pretty cool hike we did pretty early in the season (the whole trail was snow). One cool part about doing it in the snow was that the steam from the hot springs and thermal pools was a stark contrast to the cold snow, and it made them stand out more.
